Normalcy was disrupted in Parklands, Nairobi, after residents took to the streets on May 31, 2025, to protest against what they termed unlawful construction projects.
The demonstrators accused developers of ignoring multiple court orders halting construction, risking lives, and degrading the environment. Residents claimed at least eight workers had died due to unsafe conditions, with one fatality reported in February following the collapse of a building on Third Avenue.
Protesters also decried increased traffic, noise, dust, and poor waste management, blaming the projects for clogged drainage that has led to frequent flooding. They alleged developers had begun excavations without necessary permits, disregarding public participation requirements.
One resident noted a recent case where materials were stored on one lane of a busy road, worsening traffic congestion.
As pressure mounts, residents are calling for county enforcement agencies to act and restore order. They stressed that lives and the environment were being sacrificed in the name of profit and unchecked development.
