KMPDU condemns threats against striking Kiambu doctors

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has condemned threats and intimidation directed at striking doctors in Kiambu County, warning that any form of victimisation will prompt nationwide action.

KMPDU Secretary General Dr. Davji Atellah, in a statement on his X account on May 30, 2025, described the threats as unlawful and dangerous, saying they risk undermining the integrity of the healthcare system and endangering lives.

“Threatening healthcare workers for demanding their rights is not only unlawful, it is dangerous. Such actions compromise the integrity of our health systems and endanger lives,” Atellah stated.

He made the remarks after meeting doctors currently on strike in Kiambu.

According to Atellah, the doctors are demanding fair treatment, dignity, and a functional healthcare system, including timely promotions and adequate medical insurance—rights that he said are protected under the law and reinforced by a court order affirming their right to strike.

“Instead of addressing these legitimate concerns, we have seen illegal threats of dismissal,” Atellah said.

He emphasised that the union would not tolerate any attempts to intimidate or silence doctors.

“KMPDU therefore issues this firm warning: any form of intimidation or victimisation will trigger a nationwide escalation. Doctors across the country are watching. We are ready to stand in solidarity with our colleagues in Kiambu, and we will not hesitate to act decisively to protect their rights,” he added.

“This is not a time for tantrums or threats. It is a time for leadership and responsibility.”

Atellah urged all stakeholders to cease all forms of intimidation, respect the court ruling, and immediately engage in good faith negotiations to resolve the ongoing crisis.

“The future of healthcare depends on how we treat those who sustain it. To all Kenyans—stand with us in this fight. A healthy nation begins with respected and well-supported healthcare workers,” he concluded.
