ICPAC Warns of Heavy Rains Across Kenya and East Africa from June to September

The IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC) has issued a warning about expected heavy rainfall across Kenya and parts of East Africa between June and September 2025.
According to ICPAC, the region is likely to experience above-average rainfall, raising concerns about possible flooding, landslides, and disruptions to daily life. The forecast has prompted calls for early preparedness from both governments and communities.
In Kenya, the heavy rains could affect both urban and rural areas, especially flood-prone zones in Nairobi, Kisumu, and parts of the Rift Valley. Previous floods in the country have displaced thousands, destroyed property, and disrupted transport and agriculture.
Farmers have been urged to take precautionary measures to protect their crops and livestock. The Kenya Meteorological Department has advised that while the rains may benefit agriculture, they could also cause crop destruction if not well managed.
Urban planners and disaster response teams are also on high alert. City residents are encouraged to clear drainage systems and report any blocked water channels to authorities. Slum areas and informal settlements remain particularly vulnerable to flash floods and waterborne diseases.
Health officials warn that the heavy rains may increase the risk of outbreaks such as cholera and malaria due to stagnant water and poor sanitation in flooded areas.
ICPAC continues to monitor weather patterns and will provide regular updates. Citizens are advised to follow official alerts and prepare accordingly to avoid loss of life and property during the rainy season.
