Democracy for the Citizens Party Deputy Leader Cleophas Malala has condemned the excessive use of force by security agencies during a peaceful procession in Kakamega on Saturday, May 24.The event, intended to welcome Malala home, was marred by violent clashes and heavy-handed police tactics, including the deployment of live bullets and teargas.
Malala criticized these actions, emphasizing that Kenya is a nation governed by the rule of law and that such brutal measures have no place in a modern democratic society.
In a statement, he warned the current administration that intimidation and coercion would not dampen their determination to ensure President William Ruto serves only one term.
The unrest erupted in Kakamega’s central business district, where groups believed to be DCP supporters clashed, prompting police to intervene forcefully.
The disorder forced many businesses to close temporarily as authorities struggled to restore order. The incident follows the recent launch of the DCP earlier this month, where Malala was named deputy party leader by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua during a high-profile event in Lavington.
Tensions linked to the party have flared before. In December 2024, during a thank-you service in Nyandarua County, a tear gas canister was thrown near the VIP tent while Senator John Methu was speaking, causing panic. Police responded by firing live rounds into the air.
Investigations later revealed that the disruption was caused by a police constable named Frederick Gitau.
