Renowned Kenyan political analyst Morara Kebaso has revealed that hidden tracking devices were clandestinely installed in his car after he took the vehicle to a local mechanic for routine servicing.

The startling discovery was made on Friday, 23 May 2025, raising serious concerns about privacy violations and possible political intimidation.

Kebaso, known for his outspoken views on governance and national affairs, shared the incident on social media, expressing shock and alarm. “I took my car for servicing, only to find out later that trackers had been secretly planted,” he said.

“This is a clear invasion of my privacy and an attempt to monitor my movements.” The incident reportedly occurred at a well-known garage in Nairobi, where Kebaso had taken the car for maintenance work.

After noticing unusual electrical issues, he conducted a thorough inspection and uncovered the concealed devices. While Kebaso did not accuse any individual or entity directly, he hinted at growing political tensions and an environment of surveillance targeting critics and analysts.

The discovery has sparked debate about the misuse of technology to suppress dissent and intimidate voices in the public sphere. Privacy advocates have condemned the act as a gross violation of personal rights and called for urgent investigations.

“Such tactics undermine democracy and must be stopped,” said a spokesperson from a local human rights organisation. The police have confirmed receiving a complaint from Kebaso and have launched inquiries into the matter.

Meanwhile, political observers warn that this incident could reflect a worrying trend of increased surveillance against dissenters in the country’s charged political climate.
