Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi’s whereabouts remain unknown following his arrest in Tanzania on May 19, 2025.

Mwangi was detained alongside Ugandan journalist Agather Atuhaire in Dar es Salaam while attending the treason trial of Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu.

Tanzanian authorities claim Mwangi provided false information to gain entry into the country.

While officials state that both Mwangi and Atuhaire have been deported to their respective countries, their families and human rights organizations have received no confirmation of their safe return or current location.

Hussein Khalid, CEO of VOCAL Africa, said attempts to trace the duo through airlines and legal channels have so far yielded no results. The lack of communication and transparency has raised fears about their safety and well-being.

Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs Minister Musalia Mudavadi confirmed Mwangi’s detention and noted that Kenya’s embassy in Dar es Salaam is actively involved in efforts to secure his release and verify his status.

The arrests have sparked concern across East Africa, with activists citing potential violations of regional protocols on freedom of movement and expression.

As of now, the fate of Boniface Mwangi and Agather Atuhaire remains unclear, with calls intensifying for answers and accountability.
