In a statement, Chief Officer for Environment Geoffrey Mosiria said the exercise will take one week.

According to Mosiria, the procurement of modern dustbins follows the theft and vandalism of previously installed bins.

“This initiative follows the unfortunate theft of previously installed bins, which hindered our efforts to maintain cleanliness and order in the city. These dustbins belong to the people of Nairobi, and it is our collective responsibility to protect them from vandalism, particularly by individuals who steal and sell public property to scrap metal dealers,” Mosiria said.

Mosiria disclosed that the county has established proper mechanisms, including deploying officers to guard the bins day and night.

The youthful chief officer said anyone found littering or spitting in public spaces would be arrested and charged.

He firmly stated that the new dustbins are strictly meant to be used by pedestrians and not hawkers or business people in the CB

“To curb such acts, we are deploying officers to guard the bins day and night. We wish to make it categorically clear that anyone found littering or spitting in public spaces will face arrest and prosecution, in line with existing county by-laws. This includes individuals who spit phlegm (sputum) on the ground instead of using a handkerchief or tissue—such behaviour is both unhygienic and unacceptable in a modern, clean city. Importantly, these dustbins are strictly meant for use by pedestrians, and not for hawkers, vendors, or business owners,” he added.

He warned that anyone found disposing of commercial waste in these public bins will also be arrested and prosecuted.

Mosiria urged all Nairobi residents to exercise responsible waste management and desist from any form of destruction of county assets.

“We call upon all Nairobi residents and visitors to take pride and ownership in safeguarding these public assets. Let us embrace responsible waste management and reject any form of misuse or impunity,” the chief officer stated.
