A dramatic and disturbing incident unfolded in Mombasa on Saturday night after armed and masked men confronted Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya at his hotel residence in what he termed an “illegal and cowardly attempt” to abduct him.
According to witnesses and footage that has since gone viral, the unidentified men, who claimed to be police officers, arrived in an unmarked vehicle that lacked a number plate.
Dressed in plain clothes and refusing to produce any form of identification, the men attempted to seize the MP, sparking outrage from residents.
Locals quickly gathered at the scene, fiercely confronting the assailants. In a video clip circulating on social media, angry residents can be heard shouting, “Shoot if you like.
This is an MP. You will not arrest Salasya. Kill us… This car has no number plate!”
Although the legislator is not seen in the video, Salasya later confirmed the incident, thanking neighbours for their swift action in thwarting what he described as an attempted abduction. He condemned the event in the strongest terms.
“I want to categorically condemn the reckless, shameful, and cowardly attempt by unidentified individuals purporting to be police officers. This was not an arrest. It was a criminal act disguised as law enforcement,” he stated.
Salasya, who has expressed interest in contesting the 2027 presidential election, suggested the attack was politically motivated and orchestrated by powerful forces seeking to silence him.
He called on the relevant security agencies to launch an immediate investigation and ensure accountability.
“No amount of harassment or attempted abduction will stop me from speaking for the people of Kenya and fighting for a country free from tyranny and impunity,” he declared defiantly.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
