Following the tragic death of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were, new details have emerged regarding the financial entitlements of his family and the ongoing investigation into his murder.Elected on an ODM ticket in the 2022 general election, the late legislator had not completed two full terms in Parliament, thereby disqualifying his family from receiving a pension under the Parliamentary Pensions Act.
According to the statute, MPs must serve a minimum of ten years to qualify for a pension. Since Were had not reached this threshold, his legal representatives will instead receive a gratuity amounting to five times his annual pensionable earnings.
The law further clarifies that his widow will not be entitled to monthly pension payments, and his children will not receive a pension either, though they are expected to benefit from the gratuity.
Meanwhile, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has made progress in the murder investigation.
In a statement released on May 6, 2025, the DCI identified two prime suspects: Dennis Sewe Munyasi and Edwin Oduor Odhiambo, also known as Abdul Rashid.
The duo was arrested and led detectives to Odhiambo’s residence, where crucial evidence was recovered.Among the items seized were two pistols a Sarsilmaz and a Retay Falcon—as well as nine rounds of 9mm ammunition.
A backpack and shoes matching descriptions from the crime scene were also found.
Authorities have called on the public to stay calm and avoid spreading unverified information as investigations continue.
DCI assured the public that every effort is being made to bring all perpetrators to justice swiftly and transparently.
