Raila Steps Into Murder Probe of Slain MP Ong’ondo Assassinated In Cold Blood, Issues This Update

Kenya is in shock after Kasipul Member of Parliament (MP), Charles Ong’ondo Were, was shot and killed in Nairobi on the evening of Wednesday, April 30.

The MP was attacked by two unknown gunmen on a motorcycle while on his way home after attending a parliamentary session.

Ong’ondo had just left the National Assembly at 7:24 PM after a debate on the 2025 Finance Bill. Before heading home, he stopped briefly at an M-Pesa shop in the city.

His vehicle later drove through Valley Road toward Ngong Road.

However, as the vehicle reached the City Mortuary roundabout, two men on a motorcycle blocked them. One of the gunmen got off the motorcycle and shot directly at the MP several times.

His driver and bodyguard were not harmed during the attack. They quickly rushed the MP to Nairobi Hospital, but he was declared dead on arrival.

The sudden killing has raised concerns across the country. ODM party leader Raila Odinga condemned the killing and called it “barbaric.”

He said that Ong’ondo was murdered in a cruel and planned way, right in the heart of Nairobi.

Raila confirmed that he had spoken to senior state officials who promised a full and quick investigation.

“I have talked to the security agencies and they have assured me that those responsible will be brought to justice. I ask all Kenyans to stay calm as investigations continue,” Raila said.

Ong’ondo was first elected as Kasipul MP in 2017 and was re-elected in 2022.

He had recently told close friends that he feared for his life, but he did not name anyone.

His sister-in-law, Rangwe MP Lilian Gogo, believes the murder was linked to local political fights in Homa Bay County.

Other leaders have also expressed concern about rising political tensions.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is now working on the case. Detectives have already visited the crime scene and are gathering evidence.

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetang’ula, has appointed MP Peter Kaluma to lead a team that will organize Ong’ondo’s burial.

Kenyans are mourning the loss of a leader many described as humble and hardworking. As the nation waits for answers, the demand for justice continues to grow.
