One of the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya coalition party leaders who has publicly backed the Finance Bill 2023 is Nairobi MP Esther Passaris.
In a Tuesday, June 6 interview, the lawmaker said that Azimio and former president Uhur Kenyatta shared a vision for Kenya that included better housing.
Passaris argued that despite the opposition to the 3% housing charge included in the Finance Bill 2023, Kenyans would eventually benefit from it.
Slums, she continued, invariably come with other social ills, so Nairobi needs to get rid of them.
There has been a lot of protest, but I want to point out that there is no gain without pain.
Slums must be eliminated since they are present in every area of Nairobi County and have a number of negative effects.
Increased criminality, houses that are too close to one another, illegal electricity hookups, and weekly fires in the capital city are all problems that come with slums, she said.
She said that it was completely indecent for Nairobi to have upscale shopping centres like Two Rivers, Sarit, and Village Market when others are down the road living in appalling conditions.
She also urged Kenyans to give President William Ruto’s administration some time to carry out the housing plan.
However, she cautioned that in order for the country to reap the benefits, the government must deal with corruption inside its ranks.
She noted that no matter how much money is raised from Kenyans, if graft continues, everything will inevitably fail.
“Let’s assume the best and hope that the administration takes serious action to combat corruption. No matter how much money we receive, we will not be able to provide the services if the government does not address corruption. For our people, we truly need better housing,” she continued.
