The recent news of hospitals in Kenya allegedly turning away patients on NHIF medical cover due to the government’s failure to reimburse money they had used to care for patients has shocked many. The Rural Private Hospitals Association of Kenya (RUPHA) is reported to have stated that, due to non-receipt of payments for hospital services, their accounts are empty and they are unable to pay salaries for three months.
This news has caused great distress for many, as it is yet another obstacle faced by Kenyans struggling to make ends meet. Many have had to take extreme measures just to survive, such as asking for cash payments for medical care and struggling to make payments for basic medical necessities such as oxygen tanks, pharmacy supplies and even surgical gloves.
In addition, this news has put people in the rural areas of Kenya at an even greater disadvantage, as access to medical care is an even greater challenge than for those in other parts of the country. This news serves as a reminder of the urgent need for the government to address the healthcare needs of all citizens, as no one should be denied access to medical care due to financial constraints. While the government is making attempts at improving access to healthcare, it needs to do more and much faster if it is to reduce the suffering of Kenyans.
