Raila Odinga is the Azimio One Kenya Coalition Chief. He is also the party leader of ODM. Odinga is currently acting as the opposition leader after emerging the runner-up in the August 9, 2022 election. President Ruto narrowly won the hotly contested general election.
After forming the government, Ruto has been awarding his loyalists. The president is appointing those who were with him during campaigns into different positions namely Cabinet, PS, CAS among others. As these are happening, the opposition are also putting pressure on the government. So far, Raila and his team are demanding three things from the government.
First, the opposition wants the government to reduce the cost of basic commodities such unga. They even gave the government 14 to respond to this demand. After the ultimatum elapsed, the former prime minister led his supporters to the streets to demonstrate on Monday 20 March, 2023.
The opposition also wants the government to open the IEBC servers. Odinga feels his victory was stolen and wants to know the reality. He is therefore pressuring the government to open the IEBC servers for people to know the truth. Roots party leader George Wajackoyah has also been claiming that his two million votes were stolen. So he also joined the Azimio team in the demonstration.
In addition to the the above demands, Azimio brigade wants inclusivity in the appointment of IEBC commissioners. They cite lack of transparency in the process of appointing the commissioners. The government on the other side states that the legal procedure is being followed.
However according to UDA secretary general Cleophas Malala, the above demands are not exactly what Azimio wants. Malala says that Azimio are bargaining for handshake at night. The former Kakamega senator say the opposition wants to gat into the government through handshake between president Ruto and Raila Odinga. This is according to the report posted by the Star Kenya.
