Meet The Kenyan Young Man Who Invented Mpesa Mobile Banking

The Kenyan who came up with the idea for Mpesa is generally touted as its inventor, although few people know his name. Nyagaka Anyona Ouko, when a student at Jomo Kenyatta University, developed the groundbreaking technology now known as Mpesa in the year 2000.

He was given credit for the completed test concept after he chose it and pitched it to Mr. Michael Joseph, the then-CEO of Safaricom.

Nyagaka was awarded a copyright certificate from Safaricom’s board of directors in the year 2021.

The Mpesa scheme he ran back in 2003 was quite profitable for him.

Mpesa’s earlier architect, Paul Makin, and his coworker, Nick Hughes, both claimed credit for creating the system, leading to much conjecture about who actually did it first. Even so, Safaricom released the airwaves after recognizing Nyagaka as the legitimate owner.

Prior to the launch of the billion dollar system in Kenya, Vodafone was among the companies staking a claim to it. Mpesa is used by millions of individuals in Kenya today to send and receive money. It started in Kenya, but has now spread to Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lesotho, Ghana, and South Africa. This will have devastating effects over all of Africa.

Please accept my heartfelt congrats on Nyagaka’s groundbreaking work in the area of mobile banking.
