The rail industry in Africa has over the years seen major investments in improvements, renovations and in other instances advancements.

This is most likely attributed to the benefits that lie in the mode of transport such as increased capacity access, reliability and cost effectiveness. Rail is also seen as a key strategy to curb some of the ongoing challenges like congestion on roads.

Thus the reason Kenya and Tanzania are seeing major rail investments. Kenya saw the successful completion of her Mombasa-Naivasha Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) while Tanzania is almost completing its Dar-es-Salaam-Morogoro SGR phase having recently began a test run.

Kenya’s SGR uses diesel powered trains that moves at speeds of 120km/h while Tanzania’s electric powered trains stands at 160km/h.

With Kenya’s SGR phase 1 and 2A completed (Mombasa-Nairobi, Nairobi-Naivasha respectively), plans are ongoing to extend the project to Kisumu and Malaba. Tanzania on the other hand is almost completing its phase 1 from Dar es salaam to Morogoro with subsequent phases expected to extend the project to Makutopora, Tabora, Isaka all the way to Mwanza.
