5 Biggest Problems With Hybrid Cars

1). Internal Combustion Engine

The internal- combustion engine in a hybrid car emits harmful C0 2 emissions into the atmosphere, which is usually the main thing people want to avoid when buying an electric vehicle.

2). Temperature Sensitive Battery

Too much heat will speed up battery degradation and extreme cold will negatively affect the battery range in electrified vehicles.

Cold temperatures can also cause hybrid batteries to require more time to reach operating temperature, which also causes the car’s ICE to expend more energy, leading to poorer fuel consumption.

3). Battery Production

The lithium- ion batteries in hybrids use rare earth metals, and the equipment and machines used during the mining process are diesel- powered which impacts the environment in a negative way.

4). Battery Recycling

Extracting the reusable elements from batteries is a difficult and expensive process, meaning there is a long way to go before its done on a wide, cost- effective and environmentally friendly scale.

5). PHEVs need a plug

Unlike hybrids, the batteries in plug- in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are not self charging. Drivers need to connect the PHEV to an external power source every time the battery needs charging. Sometimes locating chargers and negotiating the cables and plugs involved may be more trouble than it’s worth.
