When Hon Mohammed Ali the now MP for Nyali used to work as an investigative journalist working for KTN, he was never afraid of stepping on people’s toes and exposing the hidden rot in the society. He would even put his life at risk in the line of duty just to expose some of the rots in the society.
Through his investigative journalism, some of us were able to know things about some of our leaders that we would have never have known were it not for him. Through Jicho Pevu, he was able to do so much and many feel he should have continued with the investigative journalism job rather than joining politics.
In one of his famous exposé on drugs in which the two famous Armenian brothers Arthur Margaryan and Arthur Sargasyan were connected to drugs trafficking and other illegal activities, Kenyans got to understand what happened to Erastus Kirui Chemorei who was an adjutant of the GSU training School. It was an exposé that put his life in danger that he even had to run for his life in Germany.
The news of the killing of Erastus Kirui Chemorei hit the headlines and many were actually made to believe that he was in the list of the most wanted criminals in the country.
The public was fed with lots of information about the officer but what many people did not know that Chemorei was one of the most senior officers in the GSU and was the one keeping the key the store where cocaine that was worth sh6.4 billion that had been seized by the police at a private Villa in Malindi. Everyone knew that Chemorei had the key since the order had been given from above by the then GSU commandant Lawrence Mwadime and the then police commissioner Matthew Iteere. According to the investigative journalist Mohammed Ali, the three were to keep custody and check of the cocaine that was 6 million worth.
Sources revealed that the reason why Chemorei was chosen was because he was an honest man and full of integrity who was also good at keeping secrets. The moment he became the custodian of this highly guarded place, people begun hunting him and that was what would later lead to his death.
According to his family, in those days, Chemorei used to look disturbed and there was no one he could tell anything. Speaking to one of his neighbours, Chemorei had said that there were some people that were after him but he was not willing and ready to cooperate with them.
One particular morning would actually mark the beginning of the end of the life of Erastus Kirui Chemorei. While at his Kitale home, very early in the morning several police vehicles arrived at the home. All of the family members were present in the home Elijah who was Chemorei’s son who actually witnessed everything. There were several vehicles and all of them were ordered to sit down and remain silent.
Chemorei at this point was shocked because he knew who the people were and wondered what was wrong. Chemorei was heard telling them that if there was a problem they would have rather called him to the office instead of coming at his home. The officers said that they wanted to conduct a search in the home and that was a surprise to all of them.
One of the neighbors who was at the home was made to sit down and Elijah who was the son observed this things in shock. According to his son, he heard the men asking for a key and they even went to the house to try and search for a key. At this point none of the family members knew anything about the key and so nothing made sense at all.
At this point, Chemorei had been made to sit down on the ground with serious interrogation going on. There were all kinds of conversations going on and there was a debate where some wanted to kill him while others were against his killing.
A few moments later, gunshots were heard and they definitely knew that they were never going to see their father alive again. There were all kinds of reports about his death. Some reports said that he was trying to run when they shot him. Some reports indicate that he was illegally possessing some illegal rifles and wanted to shoot the police officers.
That became the end of Erastus Kirui Chemorei and justice has never been found for the family even after many years. Share your thoughts on the comment section below and also don’t forget to like and share the article.
