Tony Njuguna, a redykyulass comedian who imitated late president Mwai Kibaki, has expressed his sorrow, stating that Friday, April 22, was a terrible day for him.
Tony described Kibaki as “one of the best presidents Kenya has ever had,” adding that he met the late president twice during his career.
He stated that they worked on the Pamoja Tuangamize campaign in 2003 and that he was also a member of the creative team for the Kazi Iendele campaign in 2007.
Tony Njuguna, the celebrated Redikyulass comedian who played former President Mwai Kibaki, has extended his condolences following his death on April 22.
Tony, who is currently working as a creative director for Scanad and has remained a key figure in developing the next generation of comedians, called the news “devastating.”
In an interview with TUKO.co.ke, the comedian who helped shape and grow Churchill, Kenya’s current Top Comedian, lauded Kibaki as the best president Kenya has ever had.
“For me, today is a very sad day. Kenya will never have a better president than him! In my professional experience as a Creative Director at Scanad, I had the pleasure to meet him twice “he stated
Tony also said that he worked with the late president on two campaigns.
“We did the Pamoja Tuangamize commercial in 2003, and I was also on the creative team for the Kazi Iendele commercial in 2007,” the thespian explained.”I produced both of his TV commercials,” he added.
Redykyulass was the rib-cracking entertainment that many people got home early for. Walter Mongare (Nyambane), John Kiarie (KJ), and Tony Njuguna were three former classmates on the show.
They dressed up as the personalities they wished to represent, complete with hair, make-up, and voices, while satirizing common political and social topics and occurrences.
The success seen in Kenya’s comedy industry today may be attributed to the triumvirate of KJ, Nyambane, and Tony. Their presentation stood out not only because of how well their various comic styles merged into one hilarious performance, but also because they dared to cross lines that no one else had ventured to before. Mimicking late President Daniel arap Moi in his prime was like throwing stones at a police station to see if any hit their target, but they managed to pull it off. Moi went on to become one of their most well-known followers, as seen by films of his laughing heartily at their jokes at public events.
The death of Mwai Kibaki has been verified.
Tony’s condolence letter arrived just hours after President Uhuru Kenyatta announced the former president’s death.
Kenyans were devastated by his death and flocked to social media to pay tribute to Kibaki, whom they credited with restoring Kenya’s economic stability during his presidency, which lasted from 2007 to 2013.
The death of the late former president comes six years after that of his wife, Mama Lucy Kibaki.Mama Lucy, who was 80 years old, died at the Bupa Cromwell Hospital in London, United Kingdom, where she had been admitted after experiencing chest difficulties.
