Despite the fact that Victor Wanyama is the only Kenyan footballer to have played in the English Premier League when he joined Southampton in 2013 and later Tottenham Hotspurs in 2016, Kenya has a number of footballers in the country’s lower division leagues.In this article we are going to look at this footballers and the list is as follows:
1. Tyler Onyango
Onyango was born in England to a Kenyan father and an English mother.He signed his first professional contract with Everton FC in 2020 which is set to expire in June 2023.Despite playing for the Everton under 23 side, Onyango occasionally features for the senior team and has so far appeared in more than five occasions in the senior team squad.Internationally, Onyango is eligible to represent either Kenya or England.Incase of a call up into the national team Harambee Stars squad, he will become the second Kenyan to have played in the English Premier League.
2. Clarke Oduor
Oduor was born in Siaya Kenya but moved to England later on at the age of four.Currently, he turns out for English Championship league side Barnsley FC.The 22 years old can play as a left back, midfielder or a winger.Internationally, Oduor debuted for the Kenya national team back in 2020 in Harambee Stars 2-1 win over Zambia in a friendly match.
3. Jonah Ayunga
Just like Onyango, Ayunga was born in England to a Kenyan father and an English mother.He is 24 years old and currently he is in the books with English Ligue one club Morecambe.He plays as a forward and was once signed by English Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion.Ayunga was called up into Kenya national team squad once back in 2016 but never marked his debut.
4. Henry Ochieng
He is too an English born Kenyan footballer.He is 23 years old and plays as a midfielder.Over the 2020/21 season, Ochieng was signed by Watford FC where he went on to feature for their under 23 side over that season.Currently, he plays for England National league South Club Billericay Town.He received his only call up into the Kenya national team back in November 2018 for an AFCON qualifier match against Sierra Leone in a match which was later cancelled.Due to this reason, he went on to feature for Kenya’s Under 23 side the same month.
5. Vincent Harper
At 21 years old, he plays as a left back for England National league club Eastleigh.He has been in other English clubs such as Chippenham, Bristol City, Bath City and Gloucester.Internationally, he his yet to mark his debut despite being eligible to represent either Kenya or England.
6. The Obiero Brothers
This is the duo of Micah Obiero and Zech Obiero.They are sons to former Gormahia player Henry Obiero.Micah is the eldest at 21 years old and turns out for English Championship league club Huddersfield Town who had offered him out on loans to Carlisle United and FC Halifax Town over the 2020/21 season.Zech on the other side is currently 18 years old and recently signed his first professional contract with Leyton Orient which is set to expire in the summer of 2024.Internationally, they are yet to mark their debuts.
