Understanding The Term 1500 CC, 1800 CC Engine Rating In A Vehicle

Everytime people buy cars you will hear them say “my car engine is 1800 CC, 1500 CC or 3000 CC and so on. Surprisingly, for those who do not own cars may not understand these term CC in anyway. As for me, I would think 1800 CC, 1500 CC was the capacity of fuel the car consume or store on its fuel tank. I was wrong.

Today I will make you understand the term CC used by many in differentiating their car engines.

Thee term CC in any engine is the displacement of the motor measured in cubic centimeters. Therefore the term CC means Cubic Centimeters. For instance, a car that has a 1.8L engine will have an 1800cc engine. The displacement is a calculation of the bore and the stroke. Another way of understanding the term CC can be defined as engine size, and with larger engines usually comes inferior fuel economy.

However, an engine working really hard consumes disproportionately much fuel, so there are cases where cars have equal fuel economy with a tiny and slightly larger engine. For instance, if a certain size of car needs for example 60 horsepower to keep going on the motorway, a small engine that can only supply 60 horsepower max is going to work as hard as it can much of the time, which is less fuel efficient per horsepower than when working less hard.

A larger engine that can supply 90 horsepower max can supply the 60 needed for motorway driving without struggling so hard, and then it uses less fuel per horsepower than the smaller engine.
