The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has directed the Asante Mamponghemaa, Nana Agyakoma Difie II, to ensure that the burial of the late Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, takes place within the next three weeks.

Insisting that he does not wish to accept any delays in the funeral arrangements, Otumfuo says the one-week observation of Asanteman’s second-in-command should be scheduled for next Monday, May 12.

In order for the Asantehene to bury his second-in-command and occupant of the Silver Stool of Asanteman, he wants the funeral to be planned three weeks following the one-week observance.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II gave instructions at an Asanteman meeting in Kumasi on Monday, May 5, that he wanted everything to be done right away, including appointing a new chief to replace the late Occupant of the Silver Stool after the 40-day observation was over.

Otumfuo stated that he wants the successor to be selected right away following the 40-day mark.

“Tell his mother the Mamponghemaa that I don’t want any delays. Within 40 days we must complete everything. She should observe the one-week celebration next week, three weeks after that I want to bury my royal. After that she should look for the successor to be enstooled,” the Asantehene stated.

Daasebre Osei Bonsu II died on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025.

The Asantehene was notified of the death last Monday, as is customary.

The Gyaasehene, Nana Boakye Yiadom Atonsa, then made a public statement in Mampong.

On Thursday, April 17, 2025, the 86-year-old Mamponghene was initially brought to the KNUST Hospital in Kumasi. From there, he was sent to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), also in Kumasi, where he was declared deceased.

He recently made headlines when he issued an ultimatum to some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in his traditional area to apologise for saying “no Asante will be allowed to become MCE of Mampong.”

Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, known in private life as Saint Oswald Gyimah-Kessie, was born on December 31, 1939.

He was a lawyer and an economist by profession and previously served as Registrar of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

Until his death, he served as the Vice President of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs.

Barbie maker warns of price hikes as tariffs increase costs

0

Barbie maker Mattel says it will put up the prices of some of its toys in the US as President Donald Trump’s tariffs increase its costs.

The firm also says it will cut the number of products it makes in China for the American market.

At the same time, car-making giant Ford says the levies will cost it about $1.5bn (£1.13bn) this year.

They join a growing list of big businesses warning about the impact of US tariffs on their companies and the wider economy.

“Given the volatile macroeconomic environment and evolving US tariff landscape, it is difficult to predict consumer spending, and Mattel’s US sales in the remainder of the year and holiday season,” Mattel said as it updated investors on its financial performance.

The US accounts for about half of Mattel’s global toy sales. It imports around 20% of its goods sold there from China.

The company said it plans to reduce those Chinese imports to the US to below 15% by next year.

Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has imposed new import taxes of up to 145% on goods from China.

His administration said last month that when the new tariffs are added on to existing ones, the levies on some Chinese goods could reach 245%.

China has hit back with a 125% tax on products from the US.

Apart from China, Mattel imports products – including Barbie dolls and Hot Wheels cars – from Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand.

The three countries were also hit with steep tariffs by Trump in April, before they were paused for 90 days.

Last week, Trump acknowledged the potential impact of tariffs. American children might “have two dolls instead of 30 dolls”, he said, but added that China would suffer more than the US.

Carmaker Ford said it expected tariffs to add $2.5bn to its overall costs this year, mainly due to the increased expense of Mexican and Chinese imports.

But the firm said it had cut about $1bn of those added costs by taking various measures, including transporting vehicles from Mexico to Canada to avoid US tariffs.

The firm also suspended its annual earnings guidance to investors because of uncertainty around Trump’s trade policies.

In April, firms including technology giant Intel, footwear makers Adidas and Skechers, and consumer goods group Procter & Gamble detailed the impact of tariffs on their businesses.

“The very fluid trade policies in the US and beyond, as well as regulatory risks, have increased the chance of an economic slowdown with the probability of a recession growing,” Intel’s chief financial officer David Zinsner said during a call with investors.

Sportswear giant Adidas warned tariffs would lead to higher prices in the US for popular trainers, including the Gazelle and the Samba.

The finance chief of footwear firm Skechers, David Weinberg, told investors: “The current environment is simply too dynamic from which to plan results with a reasonable assurance of success.”

And Procter & Gamble– which makes Ariel laundry detergent, Head & Shoulders shampoo and Gillette shaving products –said it was considering changes to its prices to make up for the extra cost of materials sourced from China and other places.

Cable thefts leave thousands stranded on Spanish trains

0

Thousands of people were left trapped on trains or stranded overnight after the theft of copper cables halted high-speed services between Madrid and southern Spain’s Andalusia region.

Authorities opened an investigation on Monday after Sunday’s theft, which Transport Minister Óscar Puente called a “serious act of sabotage”.

He added that the cable theft took place at five locations, all within a few kilometres of each other on the high-speed line. On Monday morning, Puente said train operations were being “fully restored” .

This travel disruption comes a week after Spain and Portugal suffered a blackout, which similarly saw trains come to a standstill. The cause is still unknown.

Passengers were left stranded overnight following the travel chaos

“All of a sudden, in the last two weeks – what is going on?” Kevin, a tourist from the US, told Reuters news agency as he waited at Madrid’s Atocha station, where thousands were stranded.

More than 10,000 passengers were affected between Madrid, Seville, Malaga, Valencia and Granada, and at least 30 trains.

The disruption came after a long weekend in Madrid and ahead of the week-long Feria festival in Seville, which sees an influx of travellers to the city.

“Operations are now fully restored after a very difficult night for commuters… and staff, who had to respond under extremely complex circumstances,” the transport minister said on Monday morning.

The theft locations, he said, were in areas accessed via forest trails.

Train services were gradually returning to normal, Spain’s national rail manager Adif said on Monday afternoon.

Earlier in the day, the Spanish interior ministry said the country’s civil guard and police were in contact with Adif and other authorities to “clarify what happened and identify those responsible”.

The price of copper has soared in recent years, and cable thefts from trains and telecommunications networks have surged.

Ghana to begin digital asset regulation in September

0

Ghana’s central bank will begin overseeing the digital asset space later this year, pending the passage of legislation currently before parliament, Governor Johnson Asiama has revealed.

Asiama spoke at the African Leaders and Partners Forum, held in Washington on the sidelines of the International Monetary Fund (IMF)-World Bank Spring Meetings. He pledged the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) commitment to promoting digital asset adoption by enforcing friendly laws that protect consumers without stifling innovation.

The central bank’s oversight authority relies on legislators passing the Virtual Asset Providers Act, the governor stated. The proposed framework covers consumer protection, preventing illicit ‘crypto’ use, financial stability, cybersecurity, and the interaction of virtual asset service providers (VASPs) with mainstream finance. VASPs must obtain a license from the top bank, with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) also involved in oversight.

The central bank intends to establish a dedicated digital asset unit once the legislation is passed, Asiama added.

“This is a technology we cannot prevent, hence the need to move fast to regulate it.”

Despite the lack of regulation, Ghana’s population has taken to digital assets, led by the young and tech-savvy. A November report revealed that 3.1 million Ghanaians owned a digital asset, representing 17% of the population. Data from ‘crypto’ analytics platform CoinGecko further revealed that the country ranks fourth in Africa for ‘crypto’ interest behind Nigeria, South Africa, and Kenya.

Beyond digital assets, Ghana is also accelerating the development of its digital currency: the eCedi. In February, BoG’s innovation head, Kwame Oppong, revealed that the central bank intends to launch the central bank digital currency (CBDC) this year, pending the passing of new legislation to support a sovereign digital currency.

Speaking in Washington, Asiama reiterated the bank’s commitment to the CBDC, which he believes will digitalize the country’s payment systems.

“Africa’s future must be digital—but inclusive. Ghana’s eCedi pilot reflects our ambition to build not only innovative payment systems, but public infrastructure that expands access and safeguards monetary sovereignty,” he noted.

Asiama believes inclusive digital transformation is the best way to empower Ghana’s youth. Like many others in Africa, Ghana has a very young population, with 56% of Ghanaians aged 25 and below.

This young population has turned to digital asset trading amid an economic crisis that has led to a record number of emigrations from the West African nation. The cedi’s continued depreciation in the past two years has also pushed Ghanaians to explore hedges, with USD-pegged stablecoins proving a popular choice. In March, the cedi dipped 5.3% against the USD and 9.2% against the euro; in 2024, it lost 19% of its value against the greenback.

The Ghana Police Service has interdicted General Lance Corporal Shani Abdullai for possessing restricted pharmaceutical substances.

Lance Corporal Abdullai is stationed at Kpalsi, a suburb of Tamale in the Northern Region.

“His interdiction is to allow for a thorough investigation into his conduct in line with Police Service regulations,” a press release from the Public Affairs Directorate stated.

Restricted pharmaceuticals are medications with special controls on access, use, or distribution due to their potential for abuse, misuse, or health risks.

These restrictions include limitations on prescribing, dispensing, and purchasing, as well as requirements for storage and record-keeping.

Dos and don’ts for Mahama’s political appointees

0

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has launched a Code of Conduct outlining new guidelines for moral behavior, public accountability, and abuse of power for all political appointees under his government.

All ministers, deputy ministers, presidential staff, chief executive officers, board members, members of the Council of State, and other appointees working under the Executive are subject to the Code, which was introduced at the Jubilee House on Monday, May 5, 2025. The President and the Vice-President are likewise bound by it.

Provisions in the Code of Conduct

The Code forbids appointees from accepting gifts or favors from people or organizations that have a stake in governmental decisions, among other things.

Although gift-giving is culturally accepted in Ghana, Mr. Mahama emphasized that moral limits must now be upheld.

“If a gift is received during an official engagement and its estimated value exceeds GH¢20,000, it must be declared,” he said.

“And upon leaving office, the gift must be surrendered unless the President grants written permission for it to be retained.”

He added that government funds, including internally generated funds must not be used to purchase hampers or gift items.

Only Exception

The only exception, according to Mr. Mahama, would be gifts given to employees in honor of their achievements or upon their retirement; even these would need to be approved by the Office of the Chief of Staff and budgeted for.

Nepotism and Conflict of Interest

Nepotism and conflicts of interest are also covered under the Code. According to Mahama, appointees are required to disclose all private commercial interests, particularly those connected to government organizations. They are not allowed to use their power to get appointments or contracts for close friends or family members.

“Public perception matters. If your actions give even the appearance of bias, you compromise the integrity of your office,” President Mahama stated.

Ministerial Travel

According to Mahama, the Chief of Staff must give his or her prior approval for any travel outside of Ghana, whether it be official or not. Additionally, within 14 days of returning from any official duty, appointees are required to provide a report. Retroactive approvals will no longer be considered, he said.

Ban on buying state asset

The Code also forbids political appointees from directly or indirectly acquiring any type of governmental property, including buildings, vehicles, shares, and land.

“If you attempt to do so and you are found out, your appointment will be terminated,” the President warned.

Punishment for violating the Code

Violations of the Code will attract sanctions, ranging from public reprimands and suspension to outright dismissal.

How the Code will be enforced

To support enforcement, Mr Mahama announced plans to set up a portal for citizens to confidentially report suspected breaches.

Describing the Code as strict but necessary, he urged appointees to comply fully and lead by example.

“If you abide by this Code, it will help restore the faith of our people in our democracy,” he told the gathering.

“Let us walk this path together with discipline, humility and a clear sense of duty to the people of Ghana.”

Five talking points from Ghana’s win over Senegal

0

Ghana hit the ground running at the U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a 1-0 victory over Senegal on Monday night.

The win is Ghana’s first at the ongoing competition following an opening day 1-1 draw against Dr. Congo.

After Ghana’s game, 3Sports highlights five talking points from the tie.

More than a victory

The much-needed win over Senegal means Ghana have recorded their first victory in the competition.

But was it just about the 90 minutes at the Suez Stadium, or there is a little more to the win?

The win carried a lot of significance as it puts Ghana in pole position to advance to the quarter-finals.

The target prior to the competition was a semi-final berth and Monday’s victory has well and truly set the team, who face Central African Republic in their last group game on Thursday, on course to make it

A last four finish automatically guarantees a semi-final spot at the U20 World Cup, a competition Ghana won in 2009 but are yet to appear at since 2015.

There’s talent and there’s guidance

Two of Desmond Ofei’s established players, Jerry Afriyie and Aziz Issah, started from the bench in the Black Satellites’ first game to the amusement of Ghanaians.

Ofei was quick to rectify what many described as overthinking when he handed starting berths to Issah and Afriyie on Monday.

Afriyie repaid his manager’s belief with an assist.

Ofei has once again proven to be a manger who is not scared of making the big calls, as evidenced so far in the competition.

There are a plethora of stars in Ghana’s team who need guidance, and Ofei seems to be the right fit.

Mensah continues to flourish

Emmanuel  Mensah has so far made the tournament his own, scoring decisive goals for Ghana.

After two games, Mensah has as many goals.

His latest goal may be the most important goal yet in his career.

But Mensah’s performances have given an indication that Jerry Afriyie’s impending return to his club could be handled well by the team, who have abundance of talents.

How big a miss will Jerry Afriyie be?

Jerry Afriyie will return to his club side, CD Lugo, after playing the first two games for Ghana, as per the agreement between Ghana and his club.

Musibau Aziz is a viable option, who could step up in his absence while Emmanuel Mensah is a fast-rising option.

Although Desmond’s tenure has been marked by memorable Afriyie moments, many bonafide stars are right on cue to make up for his loss.

Indiscipline; a growing theme

It was three yellow cards against Dr. Congo in Ghana’s opening game.

A notch higher on Monday – four – though.

Only two bookings are all it takes for players to receive automatic suspensions.

The physicality of games demand every sense of aggression but not with crass.

A number of Ghana’s young talents have opted to show brawn in games.

A key area Ghana will need to improve is that of discipline.

Fire destroys Asoprochona railway slum leaving hundreds homeless

0

A fire outbreak on Monday night at the sprawling slum settlement located adjacent the Asoprochona railway station at Sakumono on  has left hundreds homeless.

Della Russel Ocloo reports that the fire, which eyewitnesses say began around 7 pm rapidly consumed the densely packed wooden structures that comprised the settlement, leaving a trail of debris and shattered lives.

The affected area, estimated to cover a 100-meter stretch and 40 meters in width, was home to numerous families.

The rapid spread of the flames, fueled by the predominantly wooden construction of the homes and close proximity of the structures, left residents with little time to salvage their belongings.

The incident some residents within the Sakumono area believes serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of informal settlements, underscoring the urgent need for improved housing and safety measures.

Some eyewitnesses told Graphic Online around 9pm at the scene that women and children especially had to flee the raging fire in search of safety amidst the chaos.

Fire fighters

The intensity of the blaze necessitated a  response from the Ghana National Fire Service. According to the Tema Regional Operations Officer, DO II Fiifi Oppong, four fire tenders were dispatched from four different fire stations across the Tema, Nungua and the Spintex Road, and firefighters battled for nearly two hours to bring the inferno under control.

The aftermath of the disaster painted a grim picture with the once vibrant slum reduced to ruins with burnt corrugated iron sheets, charred wood, and ash were all that remained of homes that once sheltered families and held their worldly possessions.

Residents, many of whom were young people and children, were seen seated behind the fence surrounding the Mouth Zion Methodist Church, while some stood in bewilderment at the scene wondering where to spend the night.

Some distraught residents were also seen sifting through the debris around desperately hoping to recover any remnants of their lives at the time of the visit by this reporter.

An eyewitness, Godwin Asalatu, whose side of the slum was spared by the fire due to the firemen’s intervention, told this reporter that his friend, who is preparing for his father’s burial in the coming weeks, lost all the items and money he had saved for the funeral, as well as his personal belongings.

“I have lost everything including the lace fabrics I usually hawk to support my family, a teary mother of two who only gave her name as Amina told this reporter.

Cause of fire

Officials of the fire service could not readily declare the cause of the fire, as they were yet to commence their investigations.

Some residents however speculated about potential electrical faults or unattended cooking fires as possible triggers.

No more buying of hampers with gov’t funds – Mahama

0

President John Mahama has instituted a stringent Code of Conduct that expressly prohibits the use of government funds for purchasing hampers or gift items.

The new policy, which took immediate effect on Monday, May 5, 2025, forms a crucial part of the administration’s 120-Day Social Contract aimed at restoring fiscal discipline and ethical governance.

The comprehensive guidelines explicitly ban all government appointees including ministers, CEOs and heads of institutions from using public funds – whether from the national budget or internally generated funds – for gifts or hampers.

“The Code forbids the use of government funds—including internally generated funds—for hampers or gift items, except for modest staff gifts recognizing excellence or retirement,” he said.

The only exception permitted is for modest tokens to recognize outstanding staff performance or retirement benefits.

President Mahama delivered this warning during the policy launch, emphasizing that the Code of Conduct represents more than just symbolic gestures.

“This document is not ceremonial; it is a living and enforceable framework that will be strictly implemented,” he declared.

“We are drawing a clear line against the misuse of public resources for unnecessary expenditures.”

The new regulations also impose strict limitations on gift acceptance, barring government appointees from receiving any gifts or favors, particularly from individuals or organizations with business before the state.

This development comes as the Mahama administration intensifies efforts to demonstrate its commitment to accountable governance within the first 120 days of assuming office.

The President has vowed to lead by example in adhering to the new standards of ethical conduct in public service.

After the launch, the President handed over two vehicles gifted to him to the state’s pool.

The declaration was in line with his newly unveiled code of conduct for government appointees.

At the ongoing U20 Africa Cup of Nations Egypt 2025, Ghana’s Black Satellites edged a fiercely contested match against Senegal with a narrow 1-0 victory, thanks to an early first-half goal from Emmanuel Mensah and a resolute display anchored by standout performances from Goalkeeper Gidios Aseako and midfield dynamo Lord Afrifa.

The game burst into life right from the start, with Ghana earning a corner and nearly scoring in the 1st minute, as Aziz Issah came close. Ghana pushed forward with several early forays into the Senegal area, applying sustained pressure.

Senegal had their first opportunity in the 6th minute, but Satellites’ goalkeeper Gidios Aseako made a good save. Moments later, Dennis Marfo received an early yellow card after a tactical foul following a defensive lapse, though Senegal failed to capitalize on the resulting free kick.

The contest evened out between the 10th and 20th minutes, but it was Ghana who struck first. Emmanuel Mensah found the net in the 15th minute after a sharp pass from striker Jerry Afriyie. The Senegalese briefly protested the goal, but the referee let it stand.

Senegal responded with urgency, creating a number of chances. They missed from a one-on-one situation in the 18th minute, had a header saved from a corner in the 20th, and saw a long-range effort fly wide a minute later. Ghana’s Jerry Afriyie then missed a gilt-edged chance in the 22nd minute after he was put through one-on-one with the Senegalese Goalkeeper.

Injuries and heavy challenges punctuated the half, including a brief stoppage for Misubau in the 24th minute. Aseako produced a sensational save in the 27th minute, denying Senegal from close range. The half ended with another chance for the Satellites in the 43rd minute, after Lord Afrifa’s brilliant play nearly created a second goal. The Satellites led 1-0 at the break.

The second half began with a missed chance for Ghana in the 46th minute, followed by a Senegalese double substitution. Senegal came close again in the 51st minute, but Aseako remained firm.

The Satellites missed more chances in the 54th and 57th minutes, while Senegal failed to convert another in the 63rd. Ghana made key changes in the 63rd minute, introducing Maxwell Azafokpe and Sulemana. Lord Afrifa, in the No. 9 jersey for the Satellites, continued to dominate the midfield, winning tackles and disrupting play with tireless effort.

Senegal made further changes in the 68th and 82nd minutes, trying to inject energy into their attack. Aseako received a yellow card in the 73rd minute for time-wasting, a sign of Ghana’s tactical management.

Andrews Adjabeng and Hayford Adu Boahen came on for the Satellites in the 78th minute as Coach Ofei looked to fresh limbs to maintain the team’s tempo.

Despite increased pressure, Senegal’s finishing let them down with a downward header in the 81st minute being expertly saved by Aseako. Joseph Aidoo came on for the Satellites in the dying embers of the match, with Marfo continuing to shine, winning a free kick in a dangerous area in the 79th. The free kick was well executed but narrowly missed the target.

Six minutes were added on at the end of regulation time and the Senegalese tried valiantly to grab the equaliser. In the 93rd minute, Senegal had one last chance with a free kick, but once again Aseako held firm.

It was a match of high tempo, missed chances, and brave defending. Ghana’s midfield energy, smart substitutions, and goalkeeping heroics sealed a deserved and hard-earned win over a physically strong Senegal side.

With this victory, the Satellites have secured four points and lie second in the group, behind the Democratic Republic of Congo on goal difference. The top two teams in each group automatically qualify to the quarterfinals of the tournament.

Ghana’s goal scorer, the enterprising Emmanuel Mensah, was adjudged the player of the match.

The Satellites will round off their Group C campaign with a match against the Central African Republic who lost 1-3 to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the Group’s earlier fixture of the day.

Police invite Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin over alleged assault on officer

Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin

The Ghana Police Service has extended an invitation to the Minority Leader, Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, to assist in an investigation after he allegedly assaulted a police officer during a recent demonstration in Accra.

The protest was held against the process to remove the Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Sackey Torkornoo.

According to the Police, following a review of the incident, the Service has written to the Right Hon. Speaker of Parliament requesting the release of Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin to assist in the ongoing investigation.

“The officer in question will also be assisting with the investigation,” the statement added.

The Ghana Police Service noted that it has reviewed several video recordings of the alleged assault by Hon. Afenyo-Markin during the just-ended demonstration.

Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, is seen in a widely circulated video in a visibly agitated state, directing his anger toward one of the police officers during the #SaveTheJudiciaryDemo.

In the video, the reason for the MP’s anger remains unclear, and it is not known what specifically provoked him. However, he is seen angrily addressing the officers from behind the barricades and then appears to knock the head of one officer, escalating the confrontation.

In an effort to de-escalate the situation, Richard Ahiagbah, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Director of Communications, is seen attempting to calm the MP and prevent the situation from worsening.

The police officer involved remained non-reactive during the incident, while his colleagues were seen trying to calm him afterward.

The demonstration, organized by political parties and led by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) under the banner #SaveTheJudiciaryDemo, was intended to defend the constitution, uphold judicial independence, and protest the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Sackey Torkornoo.

CJ’s suspension not legal, it’s pure politics

0

The Member of Parliament for Suame and Counsel for the Minority caucus has alleged that the recent suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo by President John Dramani Mahama is politically motivated.

His remarks were made on Monday, May 5, after a protest was organised by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and other political parties against the Chief Justice’s suspension.

Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV’s The Point of View with Bernard Avle, the MP argued that the decision was not rooted in legal justification but driven by partisan interests.

“This has nothing to do with legal proceedings, looking at whether a Chief Justice has committed some grievous offence. This is politics at play,” he stated.

He further claimed that the action by President Mahama aligns with the political agenda of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), citing previous statements by its leaders.

“This is somebody [Mahama] who said he’s coming to reset the judiciary. The chairman of the NDC, [Johnson Asiedu Nketia] had said the Chief Justice must be removed. And that will follow with the removal of the top members of the EC.

“The political party that has formed the government made these claims. Let’s not play the ostrich and pretend that this is just a legal process in motion. This is politics in motion. This is the President acting to the base of his party. This is a president acting under the instruction of the extreme part of his party; this is pure politics, simple.”

GAVI approves Ghana’s application for Hepatitis B birth dose vaccines

0

The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) has officially announced its approval of Ghana’s application for Hepatitis B birth dose vaccines.

The vaccines expected to arrive in the country in September this year, will resolve the issue of mother to child and early childhood transmission of the virus in the country.

Over the past two decades, Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization has been the backbone of Ghana’s immunization drive.

Making significant strides in the elimination of some childhood killer diseases, introduction of new vaccines, building resilient systems, and reaching children in areas where healthcare is once inaccessible.

Ghana is currently preparing to transition from GAVI support by 2030.

But the approval of the two new vaccines, the Hepatitis B birth dose and the HPV vaccine, would be milestone in the country’s vaccination drive when rolled out this year

Dr. Sania Nishtar, GAVI CEO, during a media engagement affirmed the global vaccine alliances support towards Ghana’s announcement of the approval of the country’s application.

“The country has consistently maintained DBT one and DPT three coverage above ninety-five percent. You have introduced thirteen antigens into your routine programs. And I just heard you talk about the HPV multi age cohort launch that you look forward to the introduction of the Hepatitis B birth dose. Very pleased to let you know that our independent review committee has approved your application. And we really look forward to supporting you in the roll out of the two new vaccines in September this year,’’ she announced.

This will be a significant drive towards efforts by government to fight vaccine preventable disease while transitioning toward self-financing its immunization programs.

Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, emphasized the importance of the approval of the vaccines for the country recounting government efforts to ensure it is self-sufficient.

“We are particularly excited to introduce the two new vaccines later this year—the Hepatitis B birth dose and the HPV vaccine. These will help us tackle cervical cancer and chronic liver disease, and we are grateful to GAVI for your technical and financial support in making them possible.
We recognize that GAVI’s support won’t last forever, and we welcome that—it’s a sign of national growth.

The recent removal of the NHIL cap and the 13% increase in our 2025 health budget represent positive steps. We are also collaborating with the Ministry of Finance to secure earmarked budget lines for vaccines. However, we will need your continued support and advocacy to help ensure that these gains are sustainable,” Mr Akandoh said.

In Ghana, approximately 2.8 million people are living with Hepatitis B Virus while approximately 14, 000 deaths recorded yearly are due to HBV.

Half the burden of chronic Hepatitis B and C infections is among people 30-54 years old, with 12% among children under 18 years of age.

Police invite Afenyo-Markin over alleged officer assault

0

The Ghana Police Service has officially invited Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to assist in an ongoing investigation following a viral video allegedly showing him assaulting a police officer during the ‘Save the Judiciary demonstration.’

According to a statement from the Police Service, multiple video footages of the incident have been reviewed, prompting the decision to seek Afenyo-Markin’s cooperation in the probe.

In a formal request, the Police Service has written to the Speaker of Parliament, asking for Afenyo-Markin’s release to aid the investigation.

The officer involved in the alleged altercation will also be assisting with inquiries.

Meanwhile, Bright Ofori Ampofo, Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfro, has defended Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin’s actions during the protest, claiming that the lawmaker was forced to retaliate after being struck by a police officer.

Mahama does not engage in retaliatory politics – Stan Dogbe to protesters

0

President John Dramani Mahama remains steadfast in his commitment to constitutional governance and does not engage in retaliatory politics, a Deputy Chief of Staff, Stan Dogbe has said.

Mr Dogbe was speaking when he received a petition from protesters on behalf of the Presidency on Monday afternoon.

Led by members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) with support from some other political parties, the protesters march through the streets of Accra protesting the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin led the call for an end to what he described as a “dangerous cycle of political retaliation,” warning that such actions could undermine public trust and destabilize Ghana’s democracy.

After receiving the petition on behalf of the presidency, Mr Stan Dogbe rejected the accusation that President Mahama had flouted the constitution in relation to the three petitions asking for the removal of the Chief Justice and the subsequent establishment of a prima face and the formation of a committee for a full inquiry.

He stressed that President Mahama’s actions are in full compliance with the rule of law and constitutional processes.

“President Mahama is not a politician who believes in retaliatory politics,” Mr Dogbe stated.

“He follows the law and respects the counsel of the Council of State.”

The Deputy Chief of Staff stressed that the suspension of the Chief Justice was a legal decision, consistent with Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, specifically Article 146(10).

He stressed that the move was neither arbitrary nor politically motivated but a lawful process grounded in constitutional precedent.

“It mirrors similar steps taken under former President Akufo-Addo’s administration, and we must not politicise legitimate mechanisms established for accountability.”

He also lauded the peaceful nature of the protest organised by a coalition of opposition parties and civil society groups, signaling the government’s openness to dialogue.

“Under President Mahama’s leadership, no citizen will be silenced for expressing dissent. We are committed to deepening democratic governance and strengthening institutions,” he added.

The protest, which saw participation from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), the National Democratic Party (NDP), the People’s National Party (PNP), and the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), condemned the suspension as an unprecedented attack on judicial independence.

Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin emphasised that the protest was not about party politics but about the preservation of Ghana’s constitutional integrity.

“This is not an NPP matter. It’s about the soul of our democracy,” Afenyo-Markin told the press. “Our message is clear: reinstate the Chief Justice and uphold the sanctity of judicial independence.”

He confirmed that the petition had been submitted to both the Judicial Council and Parliament. “We expect the matter to be brought before the House once Parliament reconvenes,” he added.

Afenyo-Markin also urged Ghana’s political leaders to embrace restraint and maturity, steering away from extremist rhetoric. “It is time for centrists to take charge of the discourse, not political hawks whose rhetoric deepens division,” he stated.

Nobody was paid to participate in CJ suspension demo

0

Bright Ofori Ampofo, Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Bortianor-Ngleshie-Amanfro Constituency, has dismissed claims that participants in Monday’s demonstration against the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo were paid by the party.

His response follows public concerns over the large turnout at the protest, which some critics speculated was incentivized.

Speaking on Channel One’s Newsroom on Monday, May 5, Ampofo stressed that the protest was a spontaneous grassroots response to what many believed was an act of injustice.

“When injustice is going on, everybody should be worried… The mobilisation—we just had to go to our grassroots, tell them what is going on, and the fact that we cannot keep silent about it and we need to speak up brought out the numbers,” he explained.

He challenged the notion that such a crowd could have been assembled through financial inducement.

“You saw the numbers on the street. Which millionaire can pay all those people on the street? That is not it. It is not just paying somebody to come for a demonstration; it is about the conviction and the reality that is staring us in the face that there is something we needed to do,” he stated.

Reflecting on the 2024 election outcome, Ampofo acknowledged the NPP’s defeat but maintained that the party remains Ghana’s largest political force.

He attributed the loss to voter apathy among NPP supporters, many of whom, he said, now regret their decision to abstain from voting.

“They think that the bad state of NPP is still better than the best state of NDC,” he added.

Minister in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has revealed that 71 illegal miners have been arrested and over 150 excavators, vehicles, and firearms seized in the ongoing fight against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

Speaking at an event marking World Press Freedom Day—organised by the German Embassy and the UK High Commission in Accra on Monday, May 5—Kwakye Ofosu addressed diplomats, journalists, and stakeholders on the government’s efforts to curb illegal mining activities.

He emphasised the administration’s commitment to ending the menace, describing it as unwavering.

“As of the last brief that we got, 71 illegal miners have been arrested. Over 150 excavators, bulldozers, vehicles, and other weapons have been seized so far. Work is ongoing to ensure that the L.I 2462 no longer exists,” he assured.

Kwakye Ofosu disclosed that on March 20, the Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Ibrahim Murtala, laid Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2462 in Parliament, which is now expected to be revoked in full when the House reconvenes.

He added that government has abandoned plans to merely amend the regulation, which permits mining in forest reserves, and will instead pursue a complete repeal.

He further assured that existing mining laws will be reviewed and strengthened as part of a comprehensive approach to eliminate galamsey.

World Bank warns Ghana risks reversing poverty gains amid economic strain

0

The report outlines growing challenges including soaring inflation, a weakening cedi, and escalating climate-related risks, all of which are driving a sharp rise in household vulnerability.

The report reveals that more than 25% of the population now live in extreme poverty, defined as surviving on less than $2.15 a day—approximately GH¢30.28.

This alarming figure reflects a deepening cost-of-living crisis, where rising prices for food, fuel, and essential services are significantly reducing the purchasing power of ordinary Ghanaians.

The World Bank highlights that the economic downturn is disproportionately affecting low-income households and rural communities. “Poverty in Ghana fell considerably up until the COVID-19 pandemic,” the report states. “However, moderate growth due to substantial fiscal adjustments, global economic and trade uncertainties, and persistent inflation is likely to impact households and may increase poverty in the coming years. If the impacts on the poorest are not properly mitigated, the necessary economic stabilisation reforms could undermine further progress in poverty reduction.”

The Bank warns that over one million additional Ghanaians could fall into poverty unless urgent environmental and economic reforms are introduced. It calls for immediate investment in human capital, expanded social protection programmes, and enhanced climate resilience strategies to shield vulnerable populations.

To counter these threats, the report recommends structural reforms aimed at restoring macroeconomic stability, strengthening governance, and stimulating job creation. While acknowledging the severity of current challenges, it also emphasises Ghana’s strong potential for recovery through inclusive and sustainable policy actions.

The World Bank notes that it is continuing to collaborate closely with the Ghanaian government and development partners to tackle these overlapping crises and support the country’s efforts to achieve long-term stability and equitable growth.

The Medical Director at Agarwal Eye Hospital in Accra, Dr Asiwome Kwesi, has disclosed that Suzzy Pinaman, a second-year student of Adventist Senior High School in Bantama, Ashanti Region, who was allegedly shot in the eye by a classmate, is likely to require multiple surgeries.

Addressing the press on Monday, May 5, 2025, he stated that the teenager’s condition remains critical following the gunshot injury.

“It’s likely to involve multiple surgeries. The outcome is still very guarded. What that means is the result is uncertain because we are not able to see the back of the eye. And if we cannot see the back of the eye, we can only assume what might be there,” he remarked.

The teenager, who was critically injured on April 4, 2025, during a school break, is seen in a viral video being assisted into a hospital.

Suzzy was hit in the forehead when her classmate, Bernard Amoabeng, allegedly fired a gun during an argument over its functionality.

The bullet fragments lodged in her eye have left her unable to see, sleep, or properly close her eye.

She has since been unable to return to school, and her family has been struggling to finance her treatment.

In a heartbreaking video, Suzzy made a public appeal to businessman Ibrahim Mahama and former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, saying, “Hon. Kennedy Agyapong and Ibrahim Mahama, I am pleading with you to hear my cry and come to my aid. I have no one.”

Following the appeal, Ibrahim Mahama, through his aide Rafik Mahama, pledged to cover all medical expenses, both locally and abroad if necessary.

The government has inaugurated an eight-member Private Sector Participation (PSP) Steering Committee to provide strategic oversight for the implementation of the reintroduced Multiple Lease Model (MLM) aimed at transforming electricity distribution in Ghana.

The MLM approach, which segments electricity distribution services into regional units to be managed by various private operators, is designed to attract credible investors, enhance efficiency, reduce technical and commercial losses, and improve customer satisfaction nationwide.

The PSP Steering Committee will be chaired by John Abdulai Jinapor, Minister for Energy and Green Transition, with Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Minister of Finance, serving as co-chair. Other members include Hon. In a statement read on his behalf by the Deputy Minister for Energy and Green Transition, on Monday, 5, Richard Gyan Mensah, at the inauguration in Accra, Jinapor said the MLM was a cornerstone of the government’s broader energy sector recovery and modernisation strategy.

He explained that the Steering Committee would provide strategic direction for the PSP rollout, gather baseline data, including auditing the PSP deal, coordinate with ECG, NEDCo, regulatory bodies, and transaction advisors, as well as monitor progress across critical milestones.

“The Committee will also be responsible for reviewing and advising on transaction documents, procurement frameworks, draft agreements, risk mitigation strategies, regulatory compliance, and stakeholder communications,” Jinapor said.

He added that the PSP Implementation Unit within the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition would serve as the Secretariat to the Committee, offering administrative and technical support throughout the implementation process.

Jinapor charged the Committee to ensure that the procurement of technical, financial, and legal transaction advisors is completed by May 31, 2025, to facilitate the commencement of detailed implementation.

“By September 2025, we anticipate issuing the first phase of the competitive bidding documents for private concessionaires,” he stated.

Three sub-committees- Technical, Governance & Regulatory, and Stakeholder Management have also been established to support the process.

Mr. Jabesh Amissah-Arthur, Chair of the Technical Sub-Committee, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and called on Ghanaians to support the Committee as it undertakes its critical mandate.

“The road will be challenging and difficult, but I have confidence in the members that we will be able to live up to expectations by providing guidance to the restructuring of the power distribution sector to ensure customer service satisfaction,” he said.

Ghana vs Senegal (U-20 AFCON)

0

Ghana’s Black Satellites take on defending champions Senegal this evening in a high-stakes Group B clash at the ongoing U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

The match, which kicks off at 6:00 PM GMT at the New Suez Stadium, is a must-watch as both teams search for their first win of the tournament following opening-day stalemates.

Ghana drew 1-1 with DR Congo, while Senegal was held by the Central African Republic.

Desmond Ofei’s men aim to bounce back strongly and are expected to maintain much of the squad that faced DR Congo. Jerry Afriyie could be handed a start after his lively cameo off the bench, while Abdul Sulemana, who was named Man of the Match in the opener, will marshal the midfield.

Musibau Aziz, Ghana’s goal scorer last time out, could lead the attack once again, with Gidios Aseako in goal and a familiar back four of Adjabeng, McCarthy Ofori, Aaron Essel, and Dacosta Antwi providing defensive cover.

Senegal, on the other hand, is expected to stick with the same lineup, including goalkeeper Mouhamed Sissokho, midfielder Cheikh Thiam, who scored against Central African Republic, and striker Ibrahim Dieng.

This is only the second-ever U-20 AFCON meeting between these two West African giants. Senegal won the first in 2019, but Ghana will take confidence from their 1-0 win over the Young Lions of Teranga in the 2023 African Games semi-final—a tournament Ghana went on to win.

A win for either side today would significantly boost their chances of progressing to the knockout rounds and could play a crucial role in determining the group’s pecking order.

Ashanti Regional NADMO intensifies flood prevention efforts ahead of rainy season

The Ashanti Regional National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) is ramping up its efforts to prevent flooding ahead of the rainy season.

In 2024, flooding incidents in the Ashanti Region resulted in several lives being lost.

NADMO is now shifting its focus from disaster response to prevention.

According to a TV3 report, the organisation has identified multiple flood-prone communities, including Owabe, Aboabo Pelele, Akwatia Line, Sewaba, Aloga Junction, Breman UGC, and Kronom Abuohia.

Regional NADMO Director, Mohammed Nassir Ibrahim, outlined their strategy, stating that; “We are going to be able to desilt and drain the streams and gutters that are already choked, not just desilt, take the filth away so that it doesn’t go back in there.”

Ibrahim emphasised the importance of collaboration, stating; “Also, we are involving our assemblymen, sub-metros, traditional leaders, and all those who matter. So that in preparedness, we have contact with each other, and they can alert us on what needs to be done when we don’t have the power to collaborate. When we are empowered, we will deal with it.

“So, this year, we are hoping and praying that we get the necessary support to clear the streams and gutters, and to even prevent the flooding.”

He expressed hope for the necessary support to clear the streams and gutters and prevent flooding.

With the rainy season approaching, NADMO officials are working diligently to minimise the potential impacts of flooding.

To enhance their flood mitigation efforts, NADMO staff in the region are undergoing intensive training in disaster prevention techniques.

“Yes, we are NADMO, we have a duty imposed on us by law and by the state. But when the disaster strikes, it doesn’t select residents or travelers; it affects all of us,” the regional director remarked.

Through public education campaigns, desilting of drains, and community sensitisation programs, NADMO is proactively working to reduce flooding risks.

As the rains draw near, residents in high-risk areas are also taking precautions.

0

President John Dramani Mahama will deliver a special national broadcast on Wednesday, May 7, to provide an update on the progress of his administration’s 120-day contract with the people of Ghana.

The announcement was made by the Minister of State in charge of Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, who encouraged citizens across the country to tune in to the address.

According to Kwakye Ofosu, the broadcast will give Ghanaians the opportunity to independently assess the President’s performance over the past four months and determine how well he has fulfilled the promises outlined in the contract.

“On Wednesday, the President will hold a broadcast in which he will render account for his stewardship in the last four months or 120 days. Therefore, I will urge Ghanaians to tune in and listen to the President so that they can draw their conclusion as to the level of compliance with the very promises that the President made to the people of Ghana,” he said.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Monday, May 5, Kwakye Ofosu noted that the address would highlight key achievements under the President’s 120-day action plan—an integral part of his governance agenda since assuming office.

So far, President Mahama has delivered on several major promises, including:

  • Forming a leaner government, with fewer ministerial portfolios to cut public spending.

  • Holding a National Economic Dialogue, to shape a homegrown fiscal recovery strategy.

  • Conveying an Education Dialogue, aimed at renewing Ghana’s educational vision.

  • Launching the ‘Tree for Life’ and ‘Blue Water Initiative’, focused on environmental restoration.

  • Rolling out the ‘One Million Coders’ Programme, to boost digital literacy and youth employment.

  • Introducing a Code of Conduct for Government Appointees, to promote accountability and integrity in public service.

National Theatre, Twellium mark World Dance Day with Accra Psychiatric patients

0

In a heartwarming celebration of the 2025 World Dance Day, the National Theater and Twellium Industrial Company partnered to bring dance therapy to patients at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital.

The event showcased the healing power of dance, promoting mental well-being and social cohesion among the patients.

The National Dance Company, a subsidiary of the National Theatre, treated the patients to captivating performances of traditional Ghanaian dances, including Adowa, Agbadza, Kete, and Borborbor.

These vibrant performances not only entertained but also uplifted the patients, highlighting the therapeutic benefits of dance.

According to Mr. Henry Malm, Executive Director of the National Theatre, the gesture was motivated by a desire to bring joy and healing to the patients. He emphasized the significance of dance beyond entertainment, stating that it is a powerful therapeutic tool that underscores our shared humanity.

Through this initiative, Twellium and the National Theater demonstrated their commitment to promoting mental health and well-being in the community.

“We believe this international celebration should be inclusive. Our goal is not just to entertain, but to contribute to the healing process. Using dance as therapy is a commendable initiative,” he stated.

Dr Kwadwo Marfo Obeng, Director, Accra Psychiatric Hospital, lauded the initiative, noting that exposing individuals with depression to music and dance could yield remarkable improvements in their emotional and physical wellbeing.

“Music and dance are inherently social activities. Engaging in them fosters connection and helps patients feel a sense of belonging, which is vital for mental health recovery,” he said.

Dr. Obeng further emphasized that dance plays a significant role in improving the physical health of patients, particularly those who have experienced weight gain as a result of treatment.

“We need accessible and enjoyable forms of exercise for patients. Some individuals who were initially stiff during the session eventually loosened up. We hope such programmes become a regular feature.

International Dance Day is a global celebration of dances promoted by the International Dance Council (CID) and the International Theatre Institute.

The event takes place every year on April 29, which is the anniversary of the birth of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727–1810), who is considered to be the “father” or creator of modern ballet (i.e. classical or romantic ballet as we know it today not “Modern Ballet” as this is sometimes confused with contemporary ballet.)

The day strives to encourage participation and education in dance through events and festivals held on the date all over the world.

The core objective of International Dance Day is to raise public awareness of dance as an art form, a means of cultural expression, and an educational tool.

It particularly encourages governments and educational institutions worldwide to integrate dance into the education system, ensuring its accessibility from primary to higher education.

Assets declaration: Mahama should’ve referred defaulters to CHRAJ

0

Anti-corruption campaigner, Vitus Azeem says while President John Dramani Mahama’s sanctions on appointees who failed to declare their assets are punitive, the proper legal channel should have been through the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ).

In interview  on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Monday May 3,  Azeem questioned the legal basis for the action, despite acknowledging its deterrent effect.

“It is punitive enough,” he said, but questioned its effectiveness. “I think that maybe the best approach for him would have been for him to refer to the CHRAJ, that the Constitution provides in Article 287 for any privileges and actions to be taken against people who have failed to comply with their assets declaration.”

Azeem’s comments highlight the need to align anti-corruption measures with existing constitutional procedures, particularly when sanctions are involved.

Under Article 287 of Ghana’s Constitution, complaints related to breaches of the code of conduct for public officers, including failure to declare assets, must be investigated by CHRAJ, which also has the power to recommend sanctions.

President Mahama has given all appointees until May 7, 2025, to complete their asset declarations or face automatic dismissal.

President’s move is commendable – Prof Agyeman-Duah

0

Former United Nations Senior Governance Advisor, Prof Baffour Agyeman-Duah, has expressed support for President John Dramani Mahama’s recent move to sanction appointees who failed to comply with asset declaration regulations, describing it as a “good beginning” and a step in the right direction.

This follows the President’s directive against government appointees who missed the March 31 deadline for declaring their assets.

The President has ordered that the affected appointees forfeit three months of their salary and donate the amount to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund. He has also threatened to dismiss any appointee who fails to comply by May 6, 2025.

Speaking in an interview on on Monday, May 5, Prof Agyeman-Duah said he was “quite pleased” with the initiative, even though it did not entirely meet initial expectations.

“I’m happy that he’s taken this step. It might not be what we expected, especially since in his first announcement, he seemed to have said if you don’t do it by March, you’d be gone,” he remarked.

The professor further noted that the decision to withhold the salaries of non-compliant appointees is a firm and commendable approach.

“Punishing them with foregoing their salaries for two or three months—I think it’s a good beginning. So, I’m happy that the President has taken this tough stance,” he stated.

Ketu South MCE to adopt new appraisal approach to implement govt agenda

0

The Ketu South Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), in the Volta Region, Nicholas Kwabla Worklachie has hinted of adopting a 360-degree appraisal approach aimed at fast tracking the successful implementation of governments resetting agenda for total development of the area.
He indicated that modern trends in local governance administration demands more commitment and dedication from all actors towards ensuring that set goals and targets are met within stipulated periods.
The MCE disclosed these at a meeting with members of the assembly on his programme for the municipality and what is expected of them during his tenure as the MCE especially the prompt submission of quarterly reports.
The 360-degree feedback or multi-rater feedback he explained is a comprehensive employee evaluation method that gathers feedback from multiple sources, including the employee themselves, their manager, peers, direct reports, and even external stakeholders especially customers.
He said instead of relying solely on the manager’s perspective, a 360-degree perspective gathers feedback from various people who interact with the employee regularly as such allows for a more complete understanding of an individual’s strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement, fostering personalized development plans.

Mr Worklachie noted that by identifying specific areas for improvement and leveraging on the feedback from various perspectives, the appraisals could contribute to better team performance and increased employee engagement in order to ensure that he does not deviate from his targets.

The MCE stated that performance standards would be set for every committee, businesses, branch executives and party members to be spearheaded by a research unit to monitor and report on their performance to enable them to translate theory into practice which could then be used as a basis for self-reflection, development planning, and coaching.

He has therefore directed members of the sub committees to submit their curriculum vitae with one page paper on their expertise to appropriately place them in the right committee.

Mr Worklachie indicated that a satellite campus of the Local Government Institute would be established at Denu, to build capacity of assembly members on strategic management structures, explaining that if effectively done would be replicated in other district and municipalities in the region.

He said Business Development Sub committees and the Ketu South Coastal Sub Committee on Disaster Management Fund would also be established to lobby the corporate individually or collectively to raise funds to dredge water bodies to open up fish farming opportunities in the area.

The MCE stated that expectations are high and they as an assembly cannot afford to disappoint the people assuring the members of carrier progression opportunities and the institution of a welfare scheme to support members.

By Emmanuel Gamson

Sekondi (W/R), April 05, GNA – Alhaji Ahmed Osman Maiwada Masala II, the Takoradi Zongo Chief, has called on state actors within the Region to intervene in dealing with the rise of illicit drug use among Zongo youths.

He said the situation was having a negative effect on their health, hence the need for effective collaboration particularly with security officials, to clamp down on those involved in the sale of such drugs within these communities.

Alhaji Masala, also the President of Western Region Heads of Zongo Chiefs, made the appeal when he led other Zongo Chiefs in the Western Region to pay a courtesy call on the Regional Minister at the Western Regional Coordinating Council (WRCC) at Sekondi.

He said: “In recent times, illegal drug dealers are gradually invading our communities to sell these substances to our youth. We are appealing to you to intervene and curb this situation because it is destroying our young people”.

He assured the Regional Minister of the chiefs’ commitment to establish a healthy working relationship with the government, to help bring the much-needed development to the Zongo communities.

NDC beach executives in AAK gives MP seven says to undo disputed appointments

0

By Isaac Arkoh

Abura Dunkwa (C/R), May 05, GNA – Concerned branch executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese Constituency, have called on Mr Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Member of Parliament (MP), to reverse some recent appointments to national security, the District Assembly and some key institutions.

The group said, the appointments disregarded the constituency’s interests, warning that failure to do so may jeopardise his chances of parliamentary re-election.

They asked for the immediate reversal within seven days, cautioning that failure to comply would be considered evidence of biases toward certain individuals and fomenting party divisions.

At a press conference on Monday at Abura Dunkwa, Mr David Dogbatse, a member of the Constituency Elections Directorate, and Mr Emmanuel Godline Forsta, an NDC Branch Chairman stated, “We entrusted our MP with the power to improve our lives, not to divide, suppress, or obstruct appointments.

“It would have been preferable to see multiple appointments made during the industrious leadership of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama’s second government, but that had not materialised because of our MP”.

The group further alleged that Mr Kwakye Ofosu had absolutely disregarded his Constituency and was not aligning with the expectations of his role.

They said during the District Assembly elections, Mr Vincent Koomson, the Constituency Chairman requested for four names from the MP and the party presented six.

However, on the day of the District Chief Executive confirmation, Mr Kwakye Ofosu allegedly instructed Mr Ekow Panyin Okyere Eduamoah, the Central Regional Minister to revoke four appointments, claiming he could not work with those individuals.

The group also said that out of the 10 slots allocated to the constituency for “National Security,” six were the MP’s slot and four for the party via the constituency Chairman.

However, during the regularisation process, three of the Constituency Chairman’s nominees were reportedly replaced by Mr Ofosu, obviously to suppress certain individuals as future competitors.

They further accused the MP of disrespecting party leadership, particularly the constituency Chairman, who was instrumental in securing his seat.

They claimed that the MP had instead, aligned with a former Constituency Chairman, whose leadership was deemed poor during the previous NDC’s eight years in government.

The Branch executives cautioned the NDC leadership at all levels, about Mr Ofosu’s use of power to suppress constituency members perceived as supporters of the current Chairman.

They alleged that despite appeals to him during the 2024 campaign period, the MP withheld campaign materials from the Chairman and cautions to him to stop his aggressive tactics persisted.

Despite winning the election by a significant margin, the group was not happy because the MP appeared determined to deny the Chairman and his followers any benefits from government appointments, undermining party unity and constituency development.

The group criticised these moves as deliberate attempts to prevent some people from the constituency from securing positions, saying his attitude demonstrated failure to empower his constituents.

The group urged the party leadership to address the root causes of divisiveness, noting that similar issues contributed to the party’s losses in 2016 and 2020.

Education Ministry to establish technical, vocational education fund

0

The Ministry of Education has announced plans to establish a Technical and Vocational Education Fund aimed at boosting support for the sector.

The announcement was made during the inauguration of the governing council of the C.K. Tendem and Tamale Technical universities on Monday, May 5.

Addressing the media after the inauguration, the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu stated that the initiative forms part of broader efforts to cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset among students.

He further revealed that the Ministry is proposing the allocation of 2% of Ghana’s oil revenue to transform the technical and vocational education landscape across the country.

“Indeed, I am working very assiduously to get Ghana and the government of President Mahama to establish a technical vocational education fund for the country.

“Indeed, as the president was launching the national apprenticeship programme, I accompanied him and as I sat through and looked through the promise of livelihoods we are likely to change and improve, I was even more convinced that this is the hour for me to pursue the technical vocational education fund,” he said.
