Ex-GFA Veep George Afriyie Calls for an Independent Body to Manage Ghana Premier League

Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), George Akwasi Afriyie has revived calls for an independent organisation to oversee the running of the Ghanaian domestic league.

The Ghana Premier League ahead of the start of the 2025-26 season acquired a mammoth cash injection by the President of the state and its cabinet which lifted off the load of the association.

The discussion of the Ghana Premier League being managed by an autonomous body has been swept under the rug, despite the FA disclosing that the Autonomous Premier League has already been registered as a company with the Registrar of Companies under Ghanaian law, and its bank accounts have been opened by the Implementation Committee chaired by His Majesty Togbe Afede XIV.

George Afriyie, a potential successor to Kurt Okraku’s administration, has hinted at the need for the Ghana Premier League to have independent management from the association, and the Executive Council overseeing the tournament.

George Afriyie acknowledged the financial support to the president and cabinet, which has significantly improved the standards of the Ghana Premier League.

Mr. Afriyie stated in an interview with Asempa FM on Wednesday morning, “With the government now investing in our league, I believe the leadership of the Ghana Premier League (GFA) must set up a different body to run the league.”

George Afriyie, the owner and President of Planners Athletic Club, voiced concerns about professionalism and transparency, which have plagued the country’s football scene in recent years.

“The Premier League must operate independently. It should be controlled by an autonomous authority to ensure professionalism and transparency,” Mr. Afriyie revealed.

George Afriyie, head of the Local Organising Committee for the 2017 WAFU Nations Cup, described the procedure that would support the decision to establish an independent league.

He advised, “The Ghana Premier League should be separated from the secretariat of the Football Association, and the autonomous body should be reporting to the General Secretary [Prosper Harrison Addo].”
