Fresh cracks have emerged within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) following a heated public confrontation between flagbearer hopefuls Kwabena Agyepong and Kennedy Agyapong, raising fears of worsening internal disunity.
Kwabena Agyepong has strongly rejected allegations by Kennedy Agyapong that some aspirants improperly signed sections of the party’s peace pact — claims that have fueled speculation of mistrust and manipulation within the party.
Describing the accusations as deceptive, Kwabena Agyepong insisted that Kennedy’s concerns stemmed from his own fear of being disadvantaged during the election process.
“He was worried he could be shortchanged,” Agyepong said, adding that attempts to portray other aspirants as dishonest were misleading and damaging.
He further dismissed suggestions that the upcoming NPP primaries could be rigged in favour of any candidate, emphasizing that safeguards exist, including the presence of agents representing all aspirants at ballot printing centres and polling stations.
Political observers warn that repeated allegations of manipulation without evidence risk eroding public confidence in the party’s internal democracy, potentially weakening the NPP’s chances as it heads toward the crucial January 31 presidential primaries.
