Gatanga MP Reveals What Gachagua, Sifuna, Matiang’i And Kalonzo Are Cooking Ahead Of 2027

Gatanga MP Edward Muriu has revealed that opposition leaders Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Edwin Sifuna and Fred Matiang’i have reached out to him and committed to pursuing a single presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election, with a coalition working formula now being drafted.

Muriu, a close ally of Gachagua, said the four leaders had all expressed commitment to the unity project, adding that a working formula for how the coalition will operate is currently being put together.

His update comes as the clearest signal yet that talks among the country’s leading opposition figures have moved beyond rhetoric toward a concrete framework for fielding one candidate against President William Ruto.

The development builds on months of shuttle diplomacy among opposition principals. Gachagua has repeatedly stated his willingness to back whichever leader emerges from consensus talks, even naming Kalonzo, Sifuna, Eugene Wamalwa, Matiang’i and Martha Karua as candidates he would support if the process did not favor him.

Kalonzo, Gachagua and Wamalwa had earlier met in Nairobi to reaffirm their commitment to a united front, with Kalonzo mandated to continue engaging other formations, including Gachagua’s Democracy for Citizens Party and the Linda Mwananchi movement.

Muriu had previously downplayed suggestions that Mount Kenya leaders were angling for specific positions within any eventual coalition arrangement, insisting instead that the region’s priority was reaching an agreement on a single presidential candidate for the broader national good.

His latest remarks suggest that despite competing ambitions among the principals involved, particularly between Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi camp and the more established opposition figures, a coordinated coalition structure is now taking shape.

The revelation nonetheless adds significant momentum to the broader push for opposition unity, with further details on the coalition’s working formula expected to emerge as talks progress ahead of the 2027 election.
