SAD NEWS: Senior Assistant Inspector General of Police Dies At a Nairobi Hospital, MP Pays Tribute

The National Police Service is mourning the death of Senior Assistant Inspector General (SAIG) Lazarus Opicho, the Commandant of the Security of Government Buildings (SGB) and VIP Protection Unit.

According to his colleagues and friends, Opicho died on Monday night, September 28, at Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi after an illness.

His death has left members of the police service, government officials and other people who knew him mourning a senior officer described as dedicated and professional.

Opicho was in charge of specialized operations that safeguarded vital government infrastructure, high‑profile dignitaries, and judicial officers.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja joined the growing list of mourners and described Opicho as a dedicated officer who served the National Police Service with commitment.

His colleagues remembered him as an honest and hardworking officer who gave his life to public service.

Bumula MP Jack Wanami Wamboka also mourned Opicho, recalling a personal experience in which the senior police officer helped protect him during a difficult period.

Wamboka said Opicho personally intervened when his life was in danger amid impeachment proceedings involving the then Agriculture Cabinet Secretary.

He described the late officer as a professional, great friend and confidant who remained committed to his duty even during challenging circumstances.

The MP praised Opicho for his courage, professionalism and friendship, saying his death was a major loss to his family, colleagues and the country.

He extended his condolences to Opicho’s family, friends, colleagues and loved ones, while remembering his contribution to public security.

The National Police Service is expected to issue an official statement on his passing.

Meanwhile, tributes continue to pour in from colleagues, leaders, and citizens who admired his service.
