Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro has risen from a relatively little-known first-time MP in 2013 to one of the most recognisable political figures in Kenya, with his political journey closely tied to the rise, consolidation, and eventual strain of President William Ruto’s political power.

The Kiharu MP is now at another defining point in his career.

He has declared that he is no longer part of the government and has promised to announce his political direction, amid growing realignments ahead of the 2027 General Election.

But Nyoro’s current position is best understood by tracing how he got here.

Nyoro entered Parliament in 2013 as the Kiharu MP on a TNA ticket, at a time when Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto were building the political alliance that would later become Jubilee.

He retained the Kiharu seat in 2017 as the relationship between Kenyatta and Ruto increasingly came under strain.

The 2018 handshake between Kenyatta and Raila Odinga changed the political landscape. Ruto and his allies interpreted the new arrangement as a threat to his 2022 presidential ambitions.

Nyoro became one of the young politicians who openly aligned themselves with Ruto’s emerging camp.

He became a prominent figure in the Tanga Tanga movement, defending Ruto and challenging the political establishment associated with the handshake.

By the 2022 election, Nyoro had evolved from a constituency politician into a key Ruto campaigner, particularly in the Mount Kenya region.

Ruto’s victory elevated Nyoro further. He became part of the group of young politicians viewed as influential within the new Kenya Kwanza administration.

His influence was reinforced when he became chairman of the National Assembly Budget and Appropriations Committee, giving him a central role in scrutinising government spending and shaping the national budget.

Parliament records show that under his chairmanship, the committee handled major budget estimates, supplementary allocations, and revenue and expenditure proposals.

From powerful insider to government critic

Nyoro’s relationship with the Kenya Kwanza establishment began changing during the political conflict between Ruto and then Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

When Gachagua faced impeachment in October 2024, Nyoro did not participate in the process.

He later said his decision was based on his conscience and Christian values, arguing that he could not support the process.

The decision had political consequences.

In March 2025, Nyoro was removed as chairman of the Budget and Appropriations Committee and replaced by Alego Usonga, MP Samuel Atandi.

A few months later, he was removed entirely from the committee and reassigned to another parliamentary committee.

Nyoro said at the time that he had not been informed why he was removed.

His political posture subsequently changed significantly.

The politician who had once been one of Ruto’s strongest defenders became an increasingly vocal critic of the government’s economic policies.

He repeatedly questioned taxation, public borrowing, debt management, fuel prices, and government spending.

By 2026, Nyoro had established himself as one of the most persistent parliamentary voices challenging the government’s economic direction.

His criticism, however, suffered a major political test in June 2026.

After weeks of opposing aspects of the Finance Bill, Nyoro was absent when Parliament voted on the legislation.

He later apologised, saying he had travelled abroad for engagements that could not be postponed.

The episode triggered questions about his political calculations, particularly because of his strong public opposition to the Bill.

Nyoro subsequently said he had left government and asked Kenyans to give him three to four weeks to explain his political direction.

That period has now extended into August.

Why Nyoro’s next move matters

Nyoro’s dilemma is bigger than whether he supports or opposes Ruto.

He built his national political identity inside Ruto’s political project. He helped mobilise support for the president in 2022 and became one of the administration’s most influential young politicians.

He also benefited from the political authority that came with being close to the centre of government power.

His break with that establishment therefore carries a different weight from an ordinary politician changing political sides.

At the same time, the Mount Kenya political environment has changed.

Gachagua has established the Democratic Congress Party and is actively building a political base in the region. Other leaders are also positioning themselves for the 2027 contest.

Nyoro therefore faces a strategic decision.

He can align with Gachagua, build an independent political platform or join another coalition.

He could also continue presenting himself as an independent voice while withholding a formal commitment.

His public statements suggest he is preparing for a larger political role, but he has yet to publicly identify the presidential candidate or coalition he intends to support.

That uncertainty explains much of the interest surrounding his latest public appearances.

Nyoro’s political journey has moved through three distinct phases: the young TNA politician, the influential Ruto ally, and now the former insider challenging the government he helped bring to power.

What comes next will determine whether his rise was primarily a product of his alliance with Ruto or whether he has built enough political capital to chart a path of his own.
