In Ghana, the newly established Ghana Sports Fund plans to introduce a pension contribution system for athletes so they can accumulate funds for the period after their active sporting careers end. The fund’s administrator, Dr. David Kofi Wuaku, stated this during a meeting with the media in Accra on September 9, MyJoyOnline reports.
Saving during a career
According to Wuaku, the initiative is intended to create a formal social support system for athletes in the country. He noted that most athletes are not covered by the SNNIT system, so the fund aims to develop a mechanism through which athletes can make contributions and save money during their active careers.
The Ghana Sports Fund administrator explained that the need for such a program is linked to the financial difficulties some athletes face after they stop competing. According to him, former athletes who represented Ghana internationally often remain without adequate support after ending their careers.

Support for former athletes
The fund also plans to identify athletes who need assistance and provide them with support to improve their well-being. Under the social support programs, priority will be given to athletes who find themselves in difficult financial or other circumstances after ending their careers.
Ghana Sports Fund board chair Professor Korjoeh Anim-Wright said that the procedure for determining aid recipients must be transparent and accountable. According to her, the board will introduce mechanisms to accurately select people who genuinely need support. The fund was created to mobilize resources for sports development and to improve the well-being of athletes and other sports industry professionals.
