The Speaker of Parliament has received the 2026 Democracy Cup trophy, formally launching the countdown to the third edition of the football showdown between Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko.

The match, scheduled for Friday, August 28, 2026, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, will determine which of Ghana’s two biggest clubs takes the lead in the head-to-head record of the tournament.

The Democracy Cup, conceived and championed by the Speaker, has seen the two clubs share the first two editions. Asante Kotoko won the inaugural competition in 2024, before Hearts of Oak claimed victory in 2025.

Receiving the trophy, the Speaker thanked the Ghana Football Association and the leadership of both clubs for their continued support for the competition.

He urged the players, officials and supporters to approach the encounter not only as a football contest but also as an opportunity to promote national unity and democratic values.

“A football match, like an election, has winners and losers, but the bond of our nation must never break at the final whistle,” he said.

“Let us show the world that Ghana can compete fiercely yet remain united, peaceful, and proud. I urge all Ghanaians to come out in numbers to Baba Yara and witness a spectacle that reflects the true spirit of our democracy,” he added.

With the series tied at one victory apiece, the August 28 encounter carries added significance as both clubs seek to establish supremacy in the emerging Democracy Cup rivalry.

The Baba Yara Sports Stadium is expected to provide the setting for another major chapter in the rivalry between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, with the organisers also positioning the fixture as a celebration of football, civic responsibility and national pride.
