Mahama third-term debate: CSOs demand national conversation on constitutional amendment

A coalition of civil society organisations has called for a national conversation on a possible constitutional amendment to allow President John Dramani Mahama to seek a third term.

The coalition, comprising Ghanaians for Progress (GHAPRO), New Voter Forum and the Institute of Security and Safety Policy Research, made the call at a joint press conference at the International Press Centre on Monday, August 10, 2026.

Steward Rich, Convener of Ghanaians for Progress, briefing the press on Monday, August 10, 2026, at the Ghana International press Centre in Accra said the debate should be guided by constitutional principles, evidence and Ghana’s long-term interests rather than political speculation.

The CSOs argued that the 1992 Constitution is not “cast in stone” and cited Article 290, which provides a procedure for constitutional amendments through Parliament and, where required, a national referendum.

They cited a CFF-Ghana survey of 2,223 respondents, which found that 39.2% supported a third-term bid, 29.2% opposed it, while 31.6% had no opinion.

The group said its support for reopening the debate is based on what it described as President Mahama’s experience, unfinished development projects and the need for continuity and stability.

“Ghana needs steady, tested hands at this moment,” the CSOs stated.

They also urged the media to distinguish between verified information, reported statements and speculation, warning against headlines suggesting that President Mahama has decided to seek a third term without credible evidence.

The coalition called on political parties to avoid turning the issue into partisan mobilisation, stressing that “Ghana’s democracy is bigger than the fortunes of the NDC, the NPP or any individual politician.”

Although President Mahama has publicly rejected calls for a third term, the CSOs urged him to remain open to the constitutional debate and allow Ghanaians to determine the matter through due process.

“Our democracy cannot be built around personalities. It must be built around institutions, constitutionalism, accountability and respect for the will of the Ghanaian people,” the group stressed.
