In South Africa, national football team head coach Pitso Mosimane has announced a preliminary 35-player squad for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Guinea and Eritrea. This is the first Bafana Bafana squad announcement since Mosimane’s appointment this week, TimesLIVE reports.

Matches at the end of September

South Africa will begin the Pamoja tournament, jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, with a home match against Guinea on September 26. The team will then play Eritrea away. Eritrea will host its home match in Egypt because it does not have a suitable stadium on its territory.

Absent due to injuries

Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Khuliso Mudau, Thalente Mbatha and Evidence Makgopa were not included in the preliminary squad, as all of them are injured. These players were part of the core group used by former coach Hugo Broos at the 2026 World Cup.

Notable inclusions in the list are Lebone Seema, Tshepo Mashilane, Jemran Dansin, Yanela Mutuma, Cassius Mailula, Puso Dithejane, Tashreeq Matthews, Ronaldo van Niel, Luther Singh and Shandre Campbell. Brooklyn Poggenpoel and Lebohang Maboe, who were not included in the final World Cup squad, were also named in the preliminary squad.

Mosimane retained a number of key players in the team, including Ronwen Williams, Sipho Chaine, Tapelo Morena, Aubrey Modiba, Nkosinathi Sibisi, Teboho Mokoena, Sphephelo Sithole, Relebohile Mofokeng and Themba Zwane.
