On September 4, the drama Landmyn by director and screenwriter Nico Scheepers opened in cinemas in South Africa. The title of the film translates as “mine.” The film tells the story of three siblings who reunite for the first time in ten years at a beach cottage.

Family reunion

In the story, writer and director Johan arrives to meet his older sister Colette, who lives in Scotland, and his younger sister Lisa. Colette arranged the cottage accommodation for a winter reunion but announces that their mother, Annatjie, will also join them. Her appearance intensifies long-standing conflicts among the relatives.

Annatjie’s sister and her son also arrive at the cottage. The film stars Ben Albertyn, Carla Smith, Dania Schutte, Nicole Holm, Juan-Christoff Smith, and Anna-Mart van der Merwe. Van der Merwe played Annatjie, the mother of the family, whom the review’s author describes as lonely and toxic to her children.

Second feature film

As Daily Maverick reports, Landmyn became Scheepers’ second feature-length work after the horror film Hen. Both of the director’s films are dedicated to families whose bonds are destroyed by traumatic experiences and mutual resentments.

The publication’s reviewer noted the combination of tragedy with comedic episodes, the acting, cinematography, and Richard Onraet’s music performed by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. The film was shot on the Cape Peninsula. The review also draws attention to the depiction of overt racism among part of South Africa’s white population.
