A 20-year-old unemployed man has been remanded into police custody by the Nsuta Circuit Court in the Sekyere Central District of the Ashanti Region for allegedly attacking a police officer during an attempt to free a suspect from detention.
The accused, Kofi Berko, a resident of Juaben, pleaded guilty to the charge when he appeared before the court presided over by Simon Nketiah Gagah on Thursday, August 27, 2026.
The court subsequently remanded him in police custody and adjourned the case to September 4, 2026, for conviction and sentencing.
According to the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Maxwell Senu, the complainant, Sergeant Ernest Atta, is stationed at the Juaben Police Station.
The prosecution told the court that on August 25, 2026, at about 7:30 p.m., Sergeant Atta had completed his duty as the first-out counter NCO and was heading home when he was approached by a man identified as Kwaku Boateng.
Boateng reportedly informed him that a group of young men had attacked police officers at the charge office in an attempt to forcibly release a suspect detained for allegedly stealing.
Sergeant Atta immediately returned to the station to assist his colleagues.
Upon arrival, he allegedly found Berko, described by the prosecution as the ringleader of the group, struggling with Constable Kuffour Collins while attempting to force his way into the charge office.
The court heard that when Sergeant Atta confronted Berko over the alleged mobilisation of about 50 young men to attack the officers, the accused allegedly became aggressive and assaulted him.
Berko is also alleged to have torn the police officer’s shirt during the confrontation.
The District Commander, ASP Samuel Asare, subsequently arrived at the station after being informed about the incident.
According to the prosecution, ASP Asare held Berko by his trousers while explaining the seriousness of his conduct to him.
However, the accused allegedly attempted to attack the commander, who was in uniform.
The police officers eventually overpowered Berko and detained him to enable them to conduct investigations into the incident.
A formal complaint was lodged against him, after which he was cautioned and interrogated.
The prosecution said Berko admitted the offence during questioning.
Following his guilty plea in court, the judge remanded him into police custody pending conviction and sentencing on September 4, 2026.
