Ghana could lose CAF goodwill over Accra Sports Stadium – MP warns

The Member of Parliament for Berekum West, Dickson Kyere-Duah, has warned that Ghana risks losing the goodwill of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) if urgent measures are not taken to address the deteriorating condition of the Accra Sports Stadium.

According to him, CAF has been “charitable” in allowing Ghana to continue hosting international matches at the facility despite longstanding concerns over its condition.

His comments follow a joint inspection of the stadium on Wednesday by officials from the National Sports Authority (NSA), the Ghana Sports Fund Board and members of Parliament.

The inspection comes as Ghana prepares to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, the 2027 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations and the upcoming Ghana Premier League season.

Speaking after the inspection, Mr Kyere-Duah said the extent of deterioration at the facility was worrying and called for serious consideration of demolishing and reconstructing the stadium.

He recalled that CAF had previously rejected the Accra Sports Stadium for international fixtures, forcing Ghana to explore alternative venues in neighbouring countries before eventually securing approval to host matches in Accra.

“In our last qualifiers, CAF initially rejected this venue, so we went to Togo and other neighbouring countries. It took diplomatic manoeuvring to eventually get us to play our games here at the Accra Sports Stadium.

“I don’t think CAF will be charitable this time around if we leave the facility in this state.”

Mr Kyere-Duah urged the government and sports authorities to immediately begin a national conversation on the future of the stadium, warning that further delays could jeopardise Ghana’s international football calendar.

“We need to do a lot more about this facility, and we should start having a conversation about the stadium as soon as possible,” he added.

The Accra Sports Stadium has undergone several renovations since its opening, with successive upgrades aimed at improving safety and bringing the facility in line with international standards.

However, concerns over its deteriorating condition have intensified ahead of a busy schedule of domestic and international competitions, putting renewed pressure on authorities to ensure Ghana has suitable venues for upcoming CAF and FIFA events.
