KABUL (Pajhwok): A strike by workers at Kenya’s largest international airport has entered its second day, causing delays and cancellations for thousands of passengers, while talks to end the strike have yet to yield a result.
Reuters reported that a “go-slow” by workers at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi continued for a second day, affecting the travel plans of thousands of passengers.
The Kenya Aviation Workers’ Union (KAWU) said the strike at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport was due to a range of grievances, including the inability to conclude a collective bargaining agreement with the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority and a lack of cooperation from the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) and Kenya Airways subsidiary Jambojet.
The Kenya Airports Authority confirmed on Sunday that some flights had been delayed but did not provide a reason for the disruptions.
Rwanda’s national carrier, RwandAir, said in an X post on Sunday that it had cancelled two flights due to what it described as air traffic control challenges at Nairobi airport.
Some passengers also said they had waited for hours at the airport for information about their flights.
Mendel Goldman, a passenger travelling to the US state of Florida, said his flight was first delayed until 1am and then until 4:30am before eventually being cancelled.
He added that the nearest alternative flight had been scheduled for the following night and that he had spent about 12 hours waiting at the airport.
KAWU Secretary-General Moss Ndiema said the union and government officials met on Sunday to resolve the issues but without success.
He said talks were due to resume at 11am Kenya time (12:30pm Kabul time), but the strike would continue until an agreement was reached.
