Entertainment commentator Nana Frimpong Zigah has commended the government for its efforts to support veteran creatives, saying the administration is “not doing badly” in recognising and assisting personalities who have made significant contributions to Ghana’s entertainment industry.

His comments come amid a number of government initiatives aimed at strengthening the creative sector, including the Creative Arts Fund and Film Development Fund, which are intended to provide financial support to creatives, businesses and other industry stakeholders.

Nana Frimpong Zigah said the government’s attention to the welfare of ageing creatives was particularly commendable, noting that veteran personalities who contributed to Ghana’s cultural heritage deserved recognition and support while they were still alive.

He cited government engagements with veteran creatives, including highlife legend Agya Koo Nimo, as an indication of the administration’s interest in addressing the welfare of personalities who helped shape Ghana’s entertainment industry.

The government has also outlined plans to improve creative infrastructure, support film development and attract private-sector investment into the creative economy as part of efforts to position the sector as a driver of employment, tourism and economic growth.

Despite the interventions, concerns remain over the implementation and accessibility of some of the funds and programmes announced to support the industry.

However, Nana Frimpong Zigah believes the government deserves credit for the steps taken so far, particularly its efforts to recognise veteran creatives and acknowledge their contributions to Ghana’s cultural development.
