EXPLAINER: How WhatsApp’s new business charges will affect Nigerian businesses

Starting October 1, 2026, Meta is set to begin charging businesses for certain messages sent through the WhatsApp Business Platform (formerly known as the WhatsApp Business API).

This change is expected to increase operating costs for many Nigerian companies that rely heavily on WhatsApp for customer communication.

Here’s a clear breakdown of what is changing and what it means for businesses in Nigeria.

What Exactly Is Changing?

Meta will introduce per-message charges for:

• Service messages (customer support replies)

• Utility messages sent within the 24-hour customer service window (e.g., payment confirmations, order updates, delivery notifications)

These messages had been free for a period. From October 1, businesses will be charged for every delivered message in these categories.

Important note: The regular WhatsApp app and the free WhatsApp Business app used by many small businesses are not directly affected.

The charges mainly target companies using the official Business Platform to handle large volumes of conversations.

How Much Will It Cost Nigerian Businesses?

Approximate rates for messages sent to Nigerian numbers:

• Utility / Service messages: About $0.0101 (roughly ₦14) per message

• Marketing messages: About $0.062 (roughly ₦84) per message

(Rates are based on an exchange rate of around ₦1,340 to the dollar and may vary slightly.)

Real Cost Impact

While ₦14 per message looks small, the numbers add up quickly for high-volume users:

• A fintech or bank sending 500,000 chargeable utility messages could pay around $5,050 (approximately ₦6.8 million) in Meta fees alone.

• Additional charges from Business Solution Providers (BSPs) or third-party platforms can further increase the final bill.

Who Will Be Most Affected?

• Banks and fintech companies (transaction alerts, account updates)

• E-commerce and retail businesses (order and delivery notifications)

• Logistics and delivery companies

• Airlines, telecoms, and large customer-service operations

• Any company managing high volumes of customer conversations via WhatsApp Business Platform

Small businesses using the standard WhatsApp Business app for basic chatting are largely unaffected for now.

What Should Nigerian Businesses Do?

• Review how many service and utility messages they currently send

• Calculate potential monthly costs based on volume

• Explore ways to reduce unnecessary messages or move some communications to other channels

• Ensure payment methods and billing arrangements with Meta or their BSP are ready before September 30 to avoid service disruptions

WhatsApp remains one of the most important business communication tools in Nigeria. While the new charges will raise costs for some companies, early planning can help businesses adapt without major disruption.
