South Africa has recorded decreases in several serious contact crimes, including murder, carjacking, residential robbery, business robbery and cash-in-transit robbery, this according to the latest crime statistics.
The figures for the first quarter of the 2026/27 financial year were released on Friday (28 August), with police leadership warning that, despite the progress, significant challenges remain.
According to the police the decrease show that intelligence-led policing, targeted operations and improved collaboration between law enforcement agencies are beginning to have an impact.
However, the figures do not erase the reality that too many South Africans continue to lose their lives to violent crime.
“Every murder remains one too many. Every victim deserves justice,” the police said.
Crime remains highly concentrated, with a relatively small number of police precincts accounting for a disproportionate amount of violent crime.
As a result, 140 high-crime police station precincts have been identified for targeted interventions. These stations will receive operational support, improved oversight and additional resources.
Alcohol drives violence at targeted stations
Police leadership has also identified alcohol as a major driver of violence.
According to the police, crime reviews conducted every Monday have shown that violence tends to concentrate over weekends and at night, particularly in and around liquor outlets.
A significant proportion of murders and serious assaults involve people who have been drinking and people who know their victims.
The police said this type of violence cannot be addressed through arrests alone and requires stronger enforcement of liquor licensing and municipal by-laws, as well as broader interventions.
Gender-based violence remains national priority
At the same time, police remain concerned about crime categories that have increased, particularly those affecting women, children and other vulnerable people.
Gender-based violence and femicide remains a national policing priority, requiring continued investment in prevention, victim support, investigations and prosecutions.
The Police MinMEC recently adopted resolutions aimed at strengthening co-operation between national, provincial and local government, improving intelligence and detective services, and intensifying the fight against organised crime, extortion, illegal mining and gang-related violence.
The resolutions also emphasise stronger partnerships with municipalities, metropolitan police departments, Community Policing Forums and other law enforcement agencies.
Reset agenda focuses on modernisation
Joint operations between the South African Police Service and the South African National Defence Force have continued during the quarter.
While these deployments have produced results in certain areas, police leadership has cautioned that temporary deployments cannot replace permanent local policing capacity.
Operations targeting organised crime, extortion syndicates, kidnapping networks, illegal mining and gangsterism will continue.
The SAPS Reset Agenda will also remain a key focus.
The agenda aims to strengthen crime intelligence and investigations, improve visible policing, invest in technology and support detectives while ensuring that police stations provide professional services to their communities.
The police is also working with Business Against Crime South Africa on a Modernisation project aimed at improving digital capabilities at police stations and equipping officers with technology to improve operational efficiency.
The police, together with National Treasury, are also exploring sustainable funding models to upgrade and maintain police station infrastructure.
Community partnerships and officer safety in focus
The police have stressed that government cannot tackle crime alone.
According to the police community policing forums, neighbourhood watches, traditional leaders, faith-based organisations, businesses, civil society and residents all have a role to play.
The recent arrests following the shootings in Reiger Park were highlighted as an example of how information from communities, combined with police investigations, can help bring alleged perpetrators to justice.
As September approaches, attention will also turn to police safety, with the month observed as Police Safety Month.
The recent killing of Anti-Gang Unit members Constable Tlomatsane and Constable Sibeko in Reiger Park highlighted the risks faced by police officers.
The shooting also claimed the lives of two young women, Roleen Lessing and Jaydin Margerman.
Police are also mourning Captain Zamani Mzayiya, a member of the Tactical Response Team who was shot in Knysna while investigating the murder of former mayor and councillor Aubrey Tsengwa.
Police leadership said attacks on officers are attacks on the rule of law and the authority of the democratic state.
With the country preparing for the upcoming local government elections, law enforcement agencies will also focus on preventing violence against political office bearers and ensuring a safe environment for democratic participation.
The first-quarter crime statistics show progress in several areas, but police leadership has warned that there can be no complacency.
The SAPS Reset Agenda and Police MinMEC resolutions will guide efforts to strengthen intelligence, improve investigations, support frontline officers and build stronger partnerships with communities.
