Former Chief of Staff under the administration of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, has called on politicians to resolve disagreements within the structures of their political parties rather than taking internal disputes into the public domain.
Speaking at the “Time with a Politician” programme organised by the Department of Political Science at the University of Ghana in collaboration with the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) Ghana Office on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, Osei-Opare stressed that internal party challenges should be addressed through dialogue and established party mechanisms.
According to her, members who encounter difficulties within their political parties should seek redress internally instead of publicly criticising their organisations.
“If you decide to join a political party or any organisation, you must remember that there are rules governing it. You joined willingly, so if you have issues, you should discuss them within the party and not take them outside. Leaving the party without addressing your concerns does not solve the problem,” she said.
She further advised party members not to abandon their political parties because of disagreements, noting that opinions that may not be appreciated today could be better understood in the future.
“Maybe today someone may not understand what you are saying, but tomorrow they might. So don’t leave the party because of disagreements. Stay, engage and work towards resolving the issues,” she added.

Addressing students at the event, Osei-Opare encouraged them to take advantage of opportunities that prepare them for leadership and public service.
She said every stage of a student’s educational journey contributes to shaping their future and urged them to actively participate in activities that build leadership, teamwork and communication skills.
“Programmes like this equip students with valuable knowledge and experiences. I commend the organisers for such an important initiative,” she said.
“What I can say is that whatever you are doing in life is a step towards your future. Even your involvement in your community, how you relate with fellow students and colleagues, and the responsibilities you take on all contribute to who you become in the future.”
Delivering remarks on behalf of the Country Representative of Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) Ghana, Anna Lena Sabroso Wasserfall, Programme Manager Wellington Amankwah Marfo said the initiative was designed to bridge the gap between political theory and practical governance.
He noted that while students spend considerable time studying political institutions, parties and governance theories, much of politics takes place through negotiations, conversations and decision-making processes that are rarely visible to the public.
“To truly understand politics requires more than studying political systems; it also requires engaging with the people who operate within them,” he said.
Marfo explained that the “Time with a Politician” series, conceived by the Head of the Department of Political Science, Professor Isaac Owusu Mensah, seeks to create meaningful dialogue between political leaders and students.
He described universities as important spaces for inquiry, critical thinking and respectful debate, adding that strengthening democracy depends on creating opportunities for young people to engage directly with experienced public servants.
