Lawyer Slams GH¢1m Bail for TikToker, Calls Conditions “Excessive and Onerous”

Lawyer for 26‑year‑old TikToker Akosua Serwaa Minat, Nana Agyei Bafour Awuah, has criticised the GH¢1 million bail granted to his client, describing the conditions as excessive and unduly harsh.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Friday, May 22, Mr. Bafour Awuah said the defence team was dissatisfied with the terms imposed by the court and is currently reviewing its legal options.

He explained that prosecutors accused the TikToker—identified by police as Mahama Aminat and popularly known as Akosua Serwaa Minat—of issuing death threats against President John Dramani Mahama in viral social media videos. The accused pleaded not guilty, but the prosecution strongly opposed her request for bail.

“The state fiercely opposed the grant of bail, but the judge, taking into account the arguments that had been made, decided to grant her bail. Except that the bail condition was too onerous, and so we are reviewing our next step,” he said.

Despite the opposition, the court granted bail with strict conditions: a GH¢1 million bond with two sureties, one of whom must be a civil servant earning at least GH¢5,000 monthly. The accused must also surrender her passport or Ghana Card to the police and report regularly to investigators.

Minat was arrested by the Inspector‑General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team (CVET) after videos allegedly containing threatening and derogatory remarks directed at the President circulated widely on TikTok and other platforms.
