I lobbied Akufo-Addo for GACL Board Chair

Broadcaster and host of Good Evening Ghana, Paul Adom-Otchere, has disclosed that he personally lobbied former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his appointment as Board Chairman of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL).

Speaking on The Upside Down Show on Channel One TV on Sunday, May 17, 2026, Mr Adom-Otchere said he sought the role after developing an interest in airport operations during the COVID-19 period.

“Yes, I did. I lobbied President Akufo-Addo for the job,” he said.

According to him, his exposure to airport operations during the pandemic influenced his decision to pursue the position.

“During Covid, I had an opportunity to work at the airport, and it was there that I developed an interest in the operations of the airport,” he explained.

He noted that the opportunity arose after the then Board Chairman moved to a position at the presidency, prompting him to directly approach the former President.

“The then Board Chairman was given an appointment at the presidency, so I went to the former President and told him to look at the possibility for me. He smiled and said he would think about it,” he recounted.

“That was how I got the position. I enjoyed every bit of it,” he added.

During his tenure, Mr Adom-Otchere’s leadership at GACL later came under public scrutiny over the so-called “Christmas tree saga,” which sparked debate over the use of public funds for festive decorations at Kotoka International Airport. The controversy generated significant public backlash and allegations of financial impropriety.

However, the matter was subsequently investigated by the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), which cleared the Ghana Airports Company Limited of any wrongdoing, effectively bringing closure to the issue.
