By a Remote Observer in Ghana
As the world turns its attention to the Kenyan capital this week, a landmark gathering of global leaders, visionaries, and entrepreneurs is unfolding at the heart of East Africa. The Africa Forward Summit: Africa-France Partnerships for Innovation and Growth, co-hosted jointly by Kenya and France in Nairobi on 11 and 12 May 2026, is not just another diplomatic event it is a defining moment in the story of Africa’s relationship with the world. And among those representing Ghana on this historic stage is Kobby Kyei, invited by the French Embassy in Ghana to attend in person.

Writing from Ghana, I watch with pride and anticipation as a fellow Ghanaian steps into a forum of this magnitude.

A Summit Unlike Any Before
Kenya has made history as the first non-Francophone African nation to host the Africa-France Summit. The event is co-hosted by President William Ruto of Kenya and President Emmanuel Macron of France. That choice alone sends a powerful signal that France’s engagement with the African continent is evolving, reaching beyond its former colonial territories to embrace the full diversity of Africa’s voices and economies.

At least 30 heads of state and government are expected in Nairobi, making this one of the most consequential Africa-France gatherings in recent memory.

Two Days, Two Tracks
The summit is structured around two distinct but complementary days.
May 11th’s theme is “Inspire and Connect,” opening with a Business Forum that highlights the breadth of France-Africa economic partnerships and promotes projects and initiatives from both African and French private sectors. Special events focus on youth, sports, and cultural and creative industries as sectors that generate jobs and build cohesion.

On May 12th, at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), the Leaders’ Summit will largely be devoted to development financing and global challenges. Some conclusions may be carried forward to the G7 Summit that France will host from 15 to 17 June in Evian.

Ghana at the Table
Kobby Kyei’s presence in Nairobi, at the invitation of the French Embassy in Ghana, is a reflection of Ghana’s standing as a key voice in African affairs. It also underscores the summit’s stated ambition to move beyond governments and engage businesses, young people, artists, civil societies, and Diasporas.

As President Macron has articulated: the relationship between France and Africa cannot merely be declared it must be built on the ground by innovators, entrepreneurs, and creative’s.

From this remote vantage point in Ghana, watching Kobby Kyei walk those halls is a reminder that Africa’s future is not being decided solely in capital cities. It is being shaped by individual’s advocates, communicators, and connectors who carry their nations with them wherever they go.

What Is at Stake
The agenda covers reform of the international financial architecture, energy transition, green industrialization, the blue economy and connectivity, artificial intelligence, sustainable agriculture, and health. It spotlights the role of young entrepreneurs, civil society, and international organizations in shaping solutions to pressing global and regional challenges.

The true test of the Africa Forward Summit lies in the tangible outcomes it will deliver. Africa is demanding equity, investment, and respect. For France, this is an opportunity to reset its engagement on terms that reflect today’s realities, and for Africa, it is a moment to assert leadership and demonstrate that the continent can convene, shape, and drive global conversations on its own terms.

A View From Ghana
Seated remotely in Ghana, I follow this summit knowing that its outcomes will ripple across the entire continent including here. Whether it is digital infrastructure investment, agricultural partnerships, or frameworks for youth employment, the conversations happening in Nairobi this week matter deeply to us.

Kobby Kyei is there. Ghana is represented. And Africa, as one, is moving forward.
The Africa Forward Summit runs 11–12 May 2026 in Nairobi, Kenya.
