Newly appointed Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has expressed strong belief in Ghana’s long-term potential, insisting the country can evolve from a nation of talented footballers into one of champions.

The Portuguese tactician was officially unveiled in Accra ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, taking charge of the senior national team on a short-term, four-month contract.

He replaces Otto Addo, who was dismissed following consecutive defeats during the March international window.

Speaking to the media at the Alisa Hotel, Queiroz made it clear that his immediate priority is delivering results on the global stage, while also laying the foundation for sustained success.

“In this moment, I have to put 99.9% of my attention on the results and the success of the World Cup,” Queiroz said.

“I wish God blesses me with the right and best results for Ghana, and if it happens as I expect, I will be very happy to give my contribution.

The former Real Madrid manager also highlighted Ghana’s rich football heritage, suggesting that with the right structure and continuity, the Black Stars can reach new heights.

“This [Ghana] is a country of footballers. I believe that the day Ghana will be able to manage the present and the future in this way, this country will not be only a country of footballers but a country of champions,” he added.

Queiroz is set to begin his tenure with a friendly against Mexico in May, before facing Wales on June 2 as part of preparations for the tournament.

Ghana will be making their fifth appearance at the World Cup and have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama. The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

After group-stage exits at the 2014 and 2022 tournaments, Queiroz faces the challenge of guiding Ghana to a more competitive showing and restoring belief on the world stage.
