‘I have bought everybody’ – Maurice Ampaw alleges message from RNAQ in divorce case

Controversial legal practitioner, Maurice Ampaw, has alleged that the embattled ex-wife of business mogul Richard Nii Armah Quaye, widely known as RNAQ, Joana Quaye, showed him messages purportedly sent by the businessman during their ongoing divorce proceedings.

According to Ampaw, Joana Quaye contacted him during the divorce process and presented what he described as threatening messages from her then-husband.

He alleged that in the messages, RNAQ claimed he had “bought everybody,” suggesting that the case would not progress anywhere.

Speaking in an interview on Lawson TV, footage of which has been shared on social media, he stated, “The reason I am angry with the judge is that when I was about to get involved in the case, Nii Quaye had threatened the lady. He told her, ‘Look, I have bought everybody and you can’t do anything.’ Before the case came out, the wife came to me and showed me the messages. Do you know that this is the third judge who has handled the matter?

“I went to confront the first female judge, and she was transferred. I went there because the wife felt she was not being treated fairly when she mounted the witness box, so I intended to file a petition against her. The lady has evidence that Nii Armah Quaye threatened her. Even though I am not saying the judge took a bribe, I am saying the ruling is very unfair.”

The High Court in Accra awarded Joana Quaye a lump sum of GH¢300,000 in the divorce settlement.

Joana Quaye, a co-founder, shareholder and director of Quick Credit Microfinance Company Limited (now Bills), filed for divorce and requested that the court order her ex-husband to pay her GH¢50 million.

However, the judge who presided over the case, Kofi Dorgu, a Court of Appeal judge with additional High Court responsibilities, awarded her GH¢300,000 as part of the distribution of the couple’s matrimonial property.

The judge reportedly stated that the amount was intended to “discourage divorces.”

“The decision of the court, reduced into its final orders, justified the grant of what may be deemed a paltry amount of GH¢300,000.00 in favour of the petitioner. The petitioner sought an order directing the respondent to pay a lump sum of GH¢50 million.

“According to Justice Dorgu, the award of GH¢300,000.00 to the petitioner who co-founded, co-owns and serves as a director of the mainstay business of the respondent was intended to dissuade ‘frequent divorces with the expectation of reaping huge monetary benefits,’” part of the report read.
