In a move signalling the burgeoning growth of American football in Ghana, the Ghana American Football Association (GAFA) paid a courtesy call to the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, marking a promising new chapter for the sport in the country.
Led by President Larry Wahab, the delegation from GAFA engaged with the Chief Director and other Directors of the Ministry to discuss the sport’s rapid development and plans. President Wahab expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to collaborate with government stakeholders and highlighted the increasing popularity of American football among Ghanaian youth.
“Over the past few years, we have seen a remarkable rise in participation and the formation of local clubs across the country,” Wahab noted. “Our goal is to harness this momentum to promote discipline, teamwork, and healthy lifestyles through American football.”
During the meeting, Wahab outlined several upcoming initiatives aimed at expanding the sport’s reach, including youth training camps, inter-club tournaments, and the integration of American football into government schools, particularly at the district level. A key focus for GAFA is to work with less privileged schools, ensuring that access to the sport is inclusive and broad-based.
Mrs. Wilhelmina Asamoah, Chief Director of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, warmly welcomed GAFA’s efforts and expressed strong support for diversifying Ghana’s sporting landscape beyond traditional sports.
She assured the delegation of the Ministry’s readiness to collaborate on capacity-building initiatives and to work closely with other relevant ministries, including the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Local Government. These collaborations aim to facilitate the implementation of American football programs in schools and districts nationwide.
To facilitate ongoing communication and media exposure, Mrs. Asamoah appointed a staff member from the Ministry as a focal person to liaise with GAFA. This move is expected to boost visibility for American Football and help elevate its profile within Ghana’s sporting community.
This engagement marks a pivotal step for GAFA as they continue to build the sport’s presence and inspire a new generation of athletes across Ghana. The association’s efforts are supported by key members, including Afia Law, International Manager at NFL; Lars Carlsen, Sports Director at IFAF; and other notable figures from Octagon Ghana and Nigeria.
As Ghana embarks on this new journey with American football, the sport’s growth prospects look promising, promising to add a new dimension to Ghana’s vibrant sporting landscape.
