Officials from the Ghana Revenue Authority’s (GRA) Tax Division conducted a compliance and fairness check at Palace Mall on Spintex Road on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, to verify implementation of recent VAT reforms.

The enforcement team, led by Dr Martin Yamborigya, the Commissioner of GRA Domestic Tax Division, engaged with shop management and customers to confirm that the Value Added Tax (VAT) rate had been adjusted to 15 percent and that the COVID-19 Levy had been removed from retail pricing, in line with the government’s recent tax reforms.

During the visit, the GRA officials inspected pricing and billing practices across several outlets to ensure that the revised tax structure was being applied correctly at the point of sale.

Shoppers begin to see price reductions as VAT reforms take effect

Customers spoken to at the mall expressed satisfaction with the observed price reductions, noting that the lower VAT rate and elimination of the COVID-19 Levy were beginning to provide tangible financial relief.

“I can now save money for fuel because the tax on items was a lot, but now it’s not,” one shopper said in an interview with GhanaWeb.

“I can feel the reduction. Before, when I bought items, the tax was a lot, but now it’s not,” another said.

Others added that the changes would ease the cost of purchasing everyday goods.

Mall shop managers confirmed that billing systems had been updated to reflect the new tax regime and that they were cooperating fully with the GRA’s compliance checks.

The exercise underscores the GRA’s commitment to enforcing the fair application of tax reforms and ensuring that consumers benefit from the intended reductions.

The authority reiterated that it will continue monitoring businesses and educating the public on compliance with the revised tax framework.
