Two Months in Hospital, One Emotional Homecoming: Kisumu Mother Returns With Newborn Triplets
A 22-year-old woman from Kisumu is celebrating a new chapter in her life after welcoming triplets following a difficult pregnancy that kept her in hospital for nearly two months.
Rael Awino Kaiga was recently discharged from Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) with her three newborns, two boys and a girl.
The arrival of the babies brought renewed joy to the family, particularly because Rael had previously experienced the loss of her first child.
According to the hospital, she was admitted to the maternity ward on September 14, when she was 31 weeks pregnant, after developing signs of premature labour.
Her pregnancy required specialised attention because she was carrying three babies, placing her at increased risk of early delivery.
Doctors closely monitored her condition and administered tocolysis, a treatment used to suppress uterine contractions and delay labour.
The intervention helped prolong the pregnancy by almost a month, giving the babies additional time to develop before delivery.
When Rael reached 34 weeks, the medical team performed a planned Caesarean section, successfully delivering all three newborns.
The babies were subsequently transferred to the hospital’s Newborn Unit (NBU) because of their premature arrival.
They remained under specialised care as doctors and nurses monitored their progress before determining that they were ready to leave the hospital.
Rael was also discharged after completing her treatment, bringing an end to the family’s extended hospital stay.
Following the delivery, the young mother thanked God for the safe arrival of her children and expressed appreciation to the medical team for supporting her throughout the challenging period.
Her partner, Elijah Odhiambo Ombora, also commended the hospital staff for their commitment to caring for his family.
The couple now faces the demands of raising three newborns at once and has appealed to well-wishers and members of the public for assistance.
They will need support in meeting the babies’ daily needs, including feeding, clothing and healthcare, as they adjust to life as a family of five.
