“ANC Will Be Out of South Africa’s National Government Within 10 Years” Prince Mashele Hit Out

Political analyst Prince Mashele has reignited debate about the future of the African National Congress (ANC) after predicting that the party could lose its place in South Africa’s national government within the next decade.

Mashele, who has frequently questioned the ANC’s political future and its ability to maintain its dominance in South African politics, believes the governing party may eventually find itself outside the national government as the country’s political landscape continues to change.

“In 10 years from now, the ANC will no longer be part of the national government in South Africa,” Mashele predicted.

His statement has attracted attention amid growing discussions about the ANC’s declining electoral support, increasing competition from opposition parties and the changing political attitudes of South African voters.

For decades, the ANC dominated South African politics following the country’s first democratic elections in 1994. Under the leadership of Nelson Mandela, the party became the central political force in the country’s transition from apartheid to democracy.

However, its political dominance has weakened considerably over the years, with growing public dissatisfaction over service delivery, unemployment, corruption, economic challenges and internal leadership struggles contributing to a decline in electoral support.

The 2024 national and provincial elections marked a historic turning point when the ANC lost its parliamentary majority for the first time since the end of apartheid. The party secured approximately 40 per cent of the national vote, forcing it to negotiate with other political organisations to establish a Government of National Unity.

The development effectively ended the ANC’s ability to govern nationally without the support of other parties and demonstrated how significantly South Africa’s political environment had changed.

The emergence of stronger opposition movements, including the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party), has also added another dimension to the ANC’s political challenges, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal, where the former governing party has faced growing competition.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance (DA), Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and other political organisations continue to compete for influence across different provinces and communities.

Mashele’s latest prediction suggests that the political developments currently unfolding could be the beginning of an even more significant transformation, potentially resulting in the ANC losing its participation in national government altogether by 2036.

His remarks also raise questions about whether the ANC can successfully rebuild its public image, address internal divisions and regain the confidence of voters before the next national elections and beyond.

Although the ANC remains an influential political organisation with established structures across the country, its future position in government will increasingly depend on its electoral performance and its ability to attract voters who may be considering alternative political parties.

The growing importance of coalition politics also means that future governments could be formed through different political arrangements, depending on which parties secure sufficient parliamentary support.

While Mashele’s forecast is not a guaranteed outcome, it has added to the ongoing discussion about whether South Africa is approaching the end of the ANC’s long-standing dominance of national politics.

For a party that has governed the country since 1994, being completely excluded from national government within the next decade would represent a historic political shift.

The coming elections will therefore be crucial in determining whether the ANC can reverse its declining fortunes or whether Mashele’s prediction will eventually become reality.
