Malema Accuses ANC of Betraying Hani, Mokaba and Winnie’s Legacy

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has criticised the African National Congress (ANC), accusing the governing party of abandoning the political principles and ideals associated with prominent struggle figures Chris Hani, Peter Mokaba and Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

Speaking in the aftermath of the 2026 Local Government Elections, Malema reportedly accused the ANC of moving away from the values that once defined its liberation struggle.

He expressed concern over what he described as the party’s decision to give influential government positions to individuals and political forces he considers right-wing.

According to Malema, the ANC’s current political direction is inconsistent with the beliefs and principles championed by the late struggle icons, who were widely associated with fighting for equality, economic justice and the interests of ordinary South Africans.

His remarks appear to reflect the EFF’s broader criticism of the ANC’s political alliances and its willingness to share power with parties whose policies differ from those traditionally associated with the liberation movement.

The comments also come amid heightened political tensions following the 2026 municipal elections, which have reshaped South Africa’s political landscape.

Malema’s accusations are likely to fuel further debate about the ANC’s political identity, its coalition arrangements and whether the party remains committed to the ideals of its historic leaders.
