ANC Retains Top Spot in Blue Crane Route as DA Loses Ground and PA Breaks Through

The African National Congress (ANC) has remained the largest political party in the Blue Crane Route Local Municipality, despite failing to secure an outright majority in the latest local government elections.

The election results reveal a closely contested political environment in the municipality, also known as KwaNojoli. While the ANC finished ahead of its competitors, the Patriotic Alliance (PA) made its first entry into the municipal council.

According to the final seat allocation, the ANC retained its five seats, the same number it held previously. However, with only five of the 11 council seats, the party falls short of the six seats needed to secure an outright majority. It will therefore need support from other parties to form a governing arrangement and maintain control of the municipality.

The Democratic Alliance (DA), which previously held five seats, lost one and now has four representatives in the council. Meanwhile, the PA secured one seat, marking its first representation in the municipality. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) also retained their existing seat.

The new council composition is as follows:

With no party holding the six seats required for an outright majority, coalition negotiations are expected to determine the municipality’s next governing arrangement.

The discussions are expected to take place at the Walter Battiss Art Museum, situated beneath the Boschberg Mountains. The negotiations could be decisive in determining which political parties work together to govern the municipality.

Although the ANC remains the largest party, its position does not guarantee that it will retain control. The PA’s newly acquired seat could also become important in the negotiations, depending on which political partnership the party chooses to support.

The main challenge for the parties will be reaching an agreement that provides stable leadership and allows the municipality to address the needs of its residents.

The outcome of the coalition talks will ultimately determine whether the ANC remains in government or whether a new political alliance takes charge of the Blue Crane Route Local Municipality.
