Matthew Booth Shares His Preferred Centre-Back Combination For Bafana Bafana

Former Bafana Bafana defender Matthew Booth has shared his thoughts on how South Africa should address its defensive concerns, highlighting the importance of having the right balance and combination of players in central defence.

Booth believes that selecting centre-backs should not depend solely on individual ability, as their preferred foot and compatibility with each other can also influence the overall performance of the defensive unit.

Explaining his approach, the former international stressed that he prefers pairing a naturally left-footed defender with a right-footed centre-back to create better balance when building attacks from the back.

“I’m a firm believer in balance, so I love to have a left-footed centre-back with a right-footed centre-back.”

His comments come as Bafana Bafana continue to assess their defensive options ahead of upcoming international assignments. Finding a dependable central defensive partnership remains an important part of head coach Hugo Broos’ preparations as the team seeks to maintain its competitiveness.

A balanced centre-back pairing can offer several tactical advantages, particularly when distributing the ball from defence. A left-footed defender operating on the left side can provide more natural passing angles, while a right-footed partner can comfortably perform similar duties on the opposite side.

The combination can also improve the team’s ability to move the ball through different areas of the pitch while maintaining defensive organisation.

Booth enjoyed a distinguished career as a defender, representing South Africa at international level and featuring in the country’s 2002 FIFA World Cup squad. His experience gives his observations additional relevance as discussions continue about the best defensive structure for the national team.

Ultimately, Bafana’s defensive challenge will require more than simply identifying talented individuals. Establishing an effective partnership, maintaining consistency and ensuring tactical understanding between defenders will remain essential.
